Just by way of example. At a recent class, the teacher,a young woman who to me dancers with quite a nice style was trying to get the ladies to do something expressive with their free arm -you know the drill, arm pointing in the air, hand in a elegant pose.Thats all nothing fancy, poise, posture, frame that sort of thing.
Boy did that go down like a lead balloon. The women were very vocal with their dislike for the mere suggestion.
And the women had a point too. I always teach that there's a nice, dramatic arm movement that you'd do in competitions or cabarets - shoulder, eblow-wrist-and-hand, etc. But I also teach that the arm movement in freestyle, social dancing is just a shadow of that movement done somewhere near the tummy.

I've got some old dance shoes that are getting a bit 'charismatic' - can I count them?

    Did they say why?

If their reason was "We don't want any of this technique stuff", then you're proving my argument.
My point was that just trying to get them to do a simple 'decoration' was met with a negative response.
In fact one did say 'never mind that, get on with it and show me the move'.
Although to be fair I do think a lot of women look on those 'decorations' as a bit 'showy'.

And the answer to that is, do classes for under-18s.

Errr... have we run out of topic?

Well, yes? I mean, you know, it's a decoration. Being showy is kind of the entire point.

And your local women don't want to be showy? You have some weird women at your place.

    Apparently not David.
They treat it in the same way as they would the practice of sweeping the hand around the head with the cascading hair across the face.

I can see your point Phil but if you read the thread it doesnt seem so far off topic.
Minnie asked if her nephews could learn to dance at Ceroc.
David and Andy said it wasnt a good idea and suggested ballroom and latin lessons as they were inclined to think that Ceroc teachers were less than competant at teaching frame blah blah blah.
I responded that they were talking complete ******** and tried to give my slant on the way todays teenager and the vast majority of dancers approach MJ, from my experience(ok you might say 'what do i know' but it is my honest opinion).I gave an example of the attitude that I had experienced, albeit not quite on the lines of frame etc but I think it illustrated my point.
OK a bit off topic but I just look at it as a progression of the subject.

Something I forgot to put in an earlier post.
Talking off ballroom lessons. If a son of mine decided to do ballroom jive I would chop his legs off
I loathe it.Done by professionals is even worse.

To be honest, I wish, as a teenager I had learnt any partner dance

unfortunately, at the time, partner dancing was going out of fashion

I guess I was lucky in that partner dancing was the norm on a Saturday night and the dance halls were packed.

Around 10 years ago, I think David and Lily were actually the best exhibition dance couple in the UK including professionals. Certainly they were the only UK couple invited to compete in the Blackpool Professional Exhibition category the year they competed.

Saying that some of the UK's best dancers came from MJ is, well, just wrong.
On the other hand, seeing as they competed in ballroom dance at university, I'm sceptical about the claim that their "background" is MJ.

Similarly, I've heard that Ryan Francois "hates" MJ, so I'm not sure it can take much credit for his development.

The first time I saw David and Lily compete in an MJ competition was 1998 at the LeJive Champs. Their cabaret was fantastic! But it wasn't MJ, they couldn't really do MJ - I think they put in a few steps between spectacular lifts.

My guess is that they were taught Ballroom and Latin as children or teenagers - but I could be wrong.

No, it was WCS (yes, really). Although they'd not been doing WCS long either. For sure, you'd only really be watching for the lifts.

Michaella at Ceroc Central is very keen on the women using their "spare" arm. I have never heard a complaint about it.
