of course, it's important to have fun before you die, and Harry Potter is certainly very entertaining
I know I don't read just for culture or to learn new things...

Probably a lot more so than many of the books that are in the list! The reminds me. I meant to re-read the latest one again

Aw, now I have to go back through the list!

    Righty:

    1. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (christmas present the other year - very good in its simplicity IMO)
    2. The Handmaid’s Tale – Margaret Atwood (love this book. The sad thing is the copy I have is one I nicked from my high school library )
    3. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – Douglas Adams (think that'll be a common one on most lists)
    4. Dracula – Bram Stoker (that was a weird one - expected more action and less "lets sit around an watch people becoming aneamic")
    5. Les Misérables – Victor Hugo (do I get extra points since it was the unabridged version I read?)
    6. Far from the maddening crowd (high school English requirement)

There were at least 20 books that I've started and got bored with, and more than that that I know the story so well from being told it or seeing adaptations etc that I would really want to read the book - e.g. Treasure Island

I used to pretend to have some amount of sophistication by telling people I've read Ulysses and Don Quixote.

Now I can tell folks I've never read any of the Harry Potter books.

Far too good to be a Freudian slap, surely?!

No sign of Alexei Sayle's "Train to Hell". Which completely devalues the entire list for me.
