    Weekenders - Chalet security

I just thought I'd share this TOP TIP

At the last Southport I decided to remove the numbered key rings from the chalet keys and put them on anonymous keyrings. This was because there were 3 of us and only 2 keys so some 'key hiding in a secret place' was going to go on.

As the weekend went on I realised there were so many advantages to not having your chalet number attatched to your key....

The first obvious one someone finds the hidden key, but they can't tell which chalet it belongs to.

Highly unlikely I know, but if your bag is nicked then the thief cannot also loot your chalet.

Also very rare, but if you feel someone is a stalker type, there is no chance of him/or her sneakily clocking your chalet number from the keys in your hand.

If you choose to adopt this plan - an alternative keyring is useful, plus you have to remember where your chalet is, and put the numbered key rings back on at the end of your stay.

Alternatively, just swap keyrings with someone else that you know who's staying in a different chalet. Then attached to your key you have an automatic reminder of where your original key ring is at the end of the event. Or if you forget your own chalet number you know who you can ask.

In this case, for maximum effect swap key-rings with someone very big and very ugly. And see what happens.

One at a time. Form an orderly queue. No pushing from the back there. Please have your keys ready.

More seriously - Two people that I know of had their purses stolen from their bags in the blues room at Southport. I am sure other places are not immune from such things. Only take with you the cash and cards that you will really need with you. It can be darned inconvenient being card/cash inconvenienced at one of these weekenders a long way from home.

Or, if you're feeling adventurous, you could pool your key rings with some strangers. Then on Saturday night, everyone goes to the chalet numbered on the ring they're holding.

(no, hang on a minute, that won't work...)

I only carry a small purse with about £10 worth of cash in case I want to buy drinks etc. Its far too easy for someone to go to bag, and fish out a purse with no-one realising its not their bag. I don't want to have to watch my bag every minute - I can't, so I have nothing worth stealing in it.

There were a couple of bags stolen at Bliss this weekend. It's unfortunate that this kind of thing happens and is a reminder to us all not to take more than we need with us. As long as I have my key, shoes and some body spray I'm ok. I only drink water and if I need anything else, I can always pop back to the chalet, which I often choose to do.

I was caught with my hand in someone else's bag at a freestyle. I sheepishly explained that I had confused their bag with my own. I do not think I was believed. Then I asked, hesitantly, if I could retrieve the change from £20 that I had just inserted into it ...

I don't even pay for my fizzy water at Southport

So why take so much cash out + my credit cards

Are they the ones that Mike Ellard later announced had been handed in? Was anything actually stolen, or were they just misplaced?

Where the bags are concerned, it might be a slight deterrent if people made their bags quite distinctive and individual. For example, I know ZW's and Cruella's bags (quite a few of you know my bag too) and would think it strange if someone strange was seen riffling though them

If its just a black Freed shoe bag, then anyone could make that mistake (or 'say' that they made that mistake )

so true - when I have helped clear up at events, there is usually a black bag left in the hall, and at the same time someone reporting their bag being taken As you can guess the wrong bag had been taken, they normally come back when the get to the car park when they try to look for keys. BTW it is normally the men who have this problem, I suppose they would think it too girly to have a colour bag

I have seen a girl stranded because someone has mistakenly taken her jacket with her car keys. I have learned to develop an individual bad taste in bags and towels and to put my drinks and other stuff in, to most people, inaccessible places. (high up in my case.)

It pays to be different. If anyone rifled through my bag they might not like what they'd find!

I put my hand in and found a week old squashed orange after Southport.
