Ooh, good poll! But can we make it so you vote for the BOOK character rather than confusing the issue with a particular actor playing the part....because Colin Firth is HOT, but Rochester is the man for me!!
A thread for all the ladies - and the gents if so inclined...
Which Byronic hero is hottest? Colin Firth as Darcy in "P&P"? Or Toby Stephens as Rochester in "Jane Eyre"?
I'm going to attempt to post a poll (never done that before), so wish me luck!

without a doubt mr darcy, the character, and actors, Colin Firth and the newer version (the one with Kiera Knightly, can't remember his name but he was nice too)
Darcy everytime for me!
Looks like it's a bit of a walkover for Darcy then!
Personally I think Colin Firth pretty much wipes the floor with Matthew McWhatsisface. Also I much prefer the Beeb's version of "P&P" - parts of the film script sounded so anachronistic and clumsy that they made me want to throw things at the screen.
There is a Mr Darcy forumite and he is
I may be a little biased though
Ohhh, and my 1000th post too
Mr Darcy for me too, please

What's going on here?!!
I am appalled that I'm the only one so far who has voted for Rochester....
He may not have been "handsome" in the usual sense, but neither is Russell Crowe, PLUS there's the whole spiritual connection bit where he calls Jane's name in despair and she hears it, PLUS he becomes deformed trying to rescue his mad wife, and finally he gets enough of his sight back to be able to see his first son.
I always wondered why there never seemed to be much competition for the guys I went for....I guess I just have better taste than the rest of you.
At last the forum deals with the serious issues!
I've never understood what everyone sees in Colin Firth. Matthew McWhatsisface every time!
I've clearly read the book too many times as I noticed this with the TV adaptation, film and a play I saw of P&P - I can usually tell which lines of dialogue are dialogue from the book, which are lines of narrative from the book adapted to be dialogue and which dialogue has been written for that adaptation.
I thought the cinematography of the film was lovely, if not entirely convinced by its faithfulness at times. I still enjoyed it.
Based on the characters (not the actors) hmm... Rochester's cyncial, baggage laden brooding or Darcy's inability to articulate his emotions and at times I feel a lack of self awareness...
Rochester needs rescued more, Darcy is more self reliant. I think Darcy wins for me.
And I certainly could identify more with Lizzy Bennett than Jane Eyre.
being Male.. and straight I can fancy neither. However if It was asked of me which one would I rather BE?
would have to be Darcy I'm afraid
If I'm totally honest, I'd much rather have Bryan Ferry. I like my men mean and moody

At the local AmDram presentation it was obvious that some line were from the book. Jane was described as looking thin, whereas our heroine ....
Any we had front row seats, theatre in the round, we could have walked over to the actors. Early on our chubby heroine had her necklace break, and imitation pearls bounced all over. A lady we were with picked up a big one.not entirely convinced by its faithfulness at times...
In the second half the director sat next to me.
He certainly did, horribly burnt and blinded by the fire ... dead silence in the theatre, time for hankies ... time for our friend to drop the big pearl and watch it bounce big and loud over to the actors. I was literally biting my tongue to stop trying at all costs to avoid glancing at the director next to me or catch the actors eyes who could all see I was on the verge of...Based on the characters (not the actors) hmm... Rochester's cyncial, baggage laden brooding ... Rochester needs rescued more...
not this time.and at times I feel a lack of self awareness...
All things considered, Darcy has my vote.
Darcy, of course wins the vote. Colin Firth was by far the most handsome Darcy but Matthew McWhatsisface was unbelieveably magnetic
Having lately finished reading 'Jane Eyre' I'm afraid I still think Mr Darcy is better...
im afraid i have to agree with the majority here and give my vote to mr darcy - ive been watching jane eyre but rochester as someone pointed out earlier needs more looking after!
