I think that anyone who ever puts anything in writing has to accept the possibility that those words can be made public, Forum "etiquette" not withstanding. That goes for letters, emails, PMs and anything else.

Therefore think long and hard before writing that message to even your most trusted friend.

    Wise words from ESG.

I can imagine some rep comments would be interesting especially with the rep tarts "oh rep me please and I will rep you back". If you only have rep power 1 then I guess you are not going to know what the hell I am talking about!

Wise and Dreadful? Nope. That's far too much for one smurf. You have to choose which you'd rather be!!

    Choose wisely. Or dreadfully!

I personally think that rep should only be between the person you have repped and yourself. No one else should know what you are saying. When you comment on something it could be cuz of personal experience or just cuz something is funny, but its your choice to rep that one person privately and it shuld stay that way! i dont think half as much rep would fly about especially the negative if people knew what others were rep-ing for.

How depressing. Not necessarily wrong, but depressing.

In the meantime, I think forum etiquette ought to be to keep rep comments private. Seeing as nearly everyone would like it that way, it seems the reasonable thing to do.

When you rep someone it is personal to them. I personally don't think it should be made public i.e. posting a comment someone sent to you unless of course it is agreed between the sender and receiver of course.

Personally I just can't wait to be in a position to be able to send rep, it must be like giving flowers.

I think that there are occasions, though, when it may be more appropriate for the message to remain private, but surely it might also be good to share the reasons behind an award more publically sometimes. It would add another dimension to the Forum, don't you think?

And I agree with El Salsero Gringo that it is very unwise to put anything in writing that you wouldn't be happy to share publically. Dangerous occupation that! Just a little thought - of course no Forumite would be guilty of awarding rep inappropriately would they?

I'd always assumed they were private between the giver and receiver.

    Shouldn't assume, huh?
