Why are we subjected to the likes of Westlife when there are kids like this out there? Awesome.

I quite agree it was awesome BUT i'm totally confused............

OK, it's years since i've played the guitar and to add to that, I only had an acoustic one but there's something weird about this video that I don't understand.

The kid appears to be playing with a single plectrum but oddly, he didn't seem to pluck every string he was playing with left hand, especially the base notes (the ones highest on the guitar) also, towards the end, during a fast bit, he only seemed to pluck about every forth note...

But at the same time, his left hand, looked quite convincing, going tem to the dozen... But he can't make a sound with his left hand alone, surely? I'm confused!

Please could someone who knows more about electric guitar playing than me, is there some gismo, that strums/plucks the strings for you, please help me understand how this could work?

there is a way of playing using your fingers on the left hand to "hammer on" and "pull off" strings creating the notes.

You can't really do this with an acoustic guitar (Well not to this effect). It's more common in Metal playing.

This is an ever exagerated version of it using both hands

    OK, Lory...

    1) He is playing to a backing track which has drums, bass and some other guitars (I can't be sure, but I think 2 other gtrs.)

    2) He is incorporating various techniques...
a: As Woodface says, there are hammer-on and pull offs.
b: there is also some right hand tapping going on...
c: a technique called "sweep picking". Here, the right hand sweeps up (which is physically down) and back down again, hitting the top 3 or 4 strings...

(at this point, I should say the high notes are lower and closer to the guitar as you look at it, the low notes are further from the body and on the "top" strings!! Confused, yet?? If you watch it, after some high sustained notes, he goes into a sequence of low (bass) chuggy notes, with higher squealy notes in between: watch his hands travel down the neck to hit these higher notes.)

c: (contd) as the right hand sweeps the string, he hammers on left hand fingers so each pluck makes 3 (or more) sounds. It creates lovely scale passages and is very diificult to do.

more examples can be found by this band

    I hope this helps...

If you liked that electric guitar video Lory, check acoustic one out. He's playing some sort of hybrid thing... not sure what it is, but boy can he play it!
