Question Do you request PM 'read receipts'?

Friday afternoon, I'm mad busy at work but still finding time to post a pointless poll.

Read receipt requesting, as well as being alliteratively amusing, says something about a person's character IMO. So, who does and who doesn't?

IMO It is pointless if it's not public Rob...I'd like to know who knows I have it and haven't answered it yet .

I voted 'no I don't', happy with that. Although very occasionally if I'm wating for a reply - I wish I had.

Deliberately so, ZW. Not interested in individual preferences, more what the overall balance is like.

Since the last major forum upgrade I missed having them turned on by default, so I added a wee hack to my Privoxy config to always turn it on for me. That way I don't have to think about it, and never have to regret it.

there is a company - forget the name - that will track your emails for you i.e. tell you if the person read it, where they read it, how many times they read it...etc..

of course it doesnt work but its a scary idea

Exchange 2003 is our mail system at work (Outlook 2000 at the client end) and a number of people use the read receipt functionality so it's always nice to upset their apple cart by viewing their emails in OWA or via the preview pane (neither of which sends a receipt) then delete it.

I missed it when it stopped being an automatic function. Now i don't bother most of the time. I occasionally use it, when i PM someone that doesn't come on the forum very often.
So where's the option for 'Sometimes' ?

Re: Do you request PM 'read receipts'?

As a rule I don't, but in the past when applying for jobs, and sending out CV's I have done so. Found the experience quite interesting because for some agencies, I would get a message (say after 3-6 months), saying message deleted without being read! Used this as a method to decide which agencies I would noy bother with. For personal/social mail I never use receipts.

Also most web based and home based emails either won't send receipts. If they do tell receipient that you requested a receipt and ask for permission to send one, to which most people normally say no anyway.

I don't do it on here - have done it in the past on AOL, but not for ages. If folk want to reply to me then fine, if they don't then fine - I'm not bovverred!

    I agree with that.
I only ask for a read receipt if i know th person isn't around much... and aren't just being rude...
Sometimes I just forget to reply to Peoples PM's though, cos I get busy doing other things... like course structures and finding good music for my DJ sets.

You dont need to give them a choice, you can force receipts on them regardless of how you send your mail. look here
The only problem is(!), sensible email programs like Thunderbird notice the attempt and stop it, but it will work with other email programs without the knowledge of the reader of the email and will give you information on how many times it was read, where in the world the person reading it is, which email program they are using, their ip address - all without giving them the option to opt out of this or even be aware it is happening.

I notice that my copy of Microsoft Outlook (which I admit is rarely accused of being a "sensible email program") seems to block HTML content in email unless I specifically say I want to see it.

From looking at the link above, it seems to reply on html in emails, so wouldn't Outlook also block this technique (maybe in a different way to Thunderbird)?

DidTheyReadIt works by inserting a images in tracked messages.
I block images from downloading in e-mails

possibly - Im not sure if its the default though - and thunderbird actually tells you which outlook doesnt.
