Sorry, wasn't blaming 9/11 et al on the support for Israel, but suggesting that the genesis for the lines of division being drawn was the 1970s where the US became associated with Israel and hence a subject for hate.

The US has long been 'involved' in Middle East/Asian politics ... remember the 'liberation' of East Pakistan (no one under 40 will). If I've got it the right way round the US supported India and USSR supported Pakistan (both West and East as it was then). That too may have left a legacy of hatred.

'Giving in to terrorists' has never been a popular topic but look at how the NI troubles were solved, Algeria and the formation of Israel ( Menachem Begin was linked to the infamous bombing of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem in 46). “One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter”.

Apparently not that unusual, though. According to the survey carried out by Channel 4, 45% (well, 44.9% of those surveyed) of British Muslims believe 9/11 was a conspiracy by Israel and America.

I think the dates are iffy, as the US has been a solid supporter of Israel for ages, since at least the 60's. The last time the US didn't support Israel was Suez, in fact.

I agree that Israel will at some point have to negotiate and make some unpleasant compromises with some unpleasant people to get a proper peace process started. As Israel did, to a point, with the PLO.

However, in all successful peace processes (IRA, ETA, ANC, etc.), the starting point has always been a cessation of violence by the terrorist organisation - with the aim of getting to a formal disavowal of violence - followed by negotiations. Once Hamas stops sending suicide bombers, once Hizbullah stops firing missiles, then there's an opportunity.

Or, putting it another way, you don't give in to terrorists - but you usually do give concessions to them if they stop being terrorists, or if sometimes even if they express a desire to stop being terrorists. It took 15-20 years of covert and overt negotiations with the IRA to get them to disavow violence, however.

And Hizbullah is, shall we say, not quite at that stage in the peace process yet...

Yeah, but did anyone even ask them about the Clangers, huh? It's a conspiracy, I tell you.

Seen on the web after the latest security scare (paraphrased):

    Because I wasn't much of a knitter
Then they came for the shoes, and I didn't speak up
    Because I wear sandals

    Because I don't smoke
Then they came for my copy of The Da Vinci Code
    And now it's on, motherf**kers!
