    Tea

    I like tea.

I drink fair trade tea as my 'regular' tea, but sometimes I like something a bit different. But I'm having problems in accquiring tea that I like. (I had planned to call into Fortnum and Masons last Monday... if the trains had been running).

I'm currently trying to get nice breakfast tea. Anyone have any suggestions for a nice (likely to be sold on the high street) brand? Please don't say Twinings, Sainsburys or Tesco's own brands as I've tried all those and they are (to me anyway) a bit bland.

Am a teaholic too. It's difficult to get really good tea - best bet is to find a good tea and coffee merchant near you (I get my favourite from a place in Cirencester via my dear father). Have you tried Whittards? They are high street but do a decent range (used to drink theirs all the time). Otherwise have you had a look to see if there are any specialist places that do mail order? You might be able to get some samples before placing a bigger order.

    Re: Tea

If you've tried Sainsbury's red label, then I'd suggest Yorkshire tea, if you want something very 'meaty'. I usually choose Assam - either bags or leaves - a generic supermarket version is fine, without paying more for the Twinings version. I also like Lapsang Souchong in the afternoon, but have found that if I make a pot with the Waitrose leaves, it becomes bitter by the second cup, so have to use an infuser which is removed relatively soon.

The best pot of tea I've ever had was at the Berkeley, with its own house blend. Yum.

FWIW, many of the 'popular' brands such as Tetley I dislike, but I'm not sure if its the tea itself or the taste of the teabag.

Yes I'd go for that too and it has the added benefit of coming in a rather appealing box. Well to me anyway.

Yes thanks, but I'm currently looking for a nice breakfast blend of black tea.

I know. I've finally got a selection of green teas that I'm happy with (though have had to get some of those via friends in England as no NI stockists). If I can get a good selection of black teas that I like I'd be happy.

    Might have to do that.

    Will try those thanks.

I actually don't like my tea too strong, so would also use an infuser if leaves, or bags, because easy to remove.

Or the water. I tended to drink coffee more in the last place I worked because the water tasted so unpleasant it ruined the taste of tea.

What is everyone's fav brand of Earl Grey?

Taylors of Harrogate, which also do my favourite kind of ground coffee - Rich Italian (& a good decaf). Very bergamot-ey. I also drink quite a bit of the Rooibos earl grey by Dragonfly teas (Waitrose & Fresh & Wild).

They do some of my favourite green tea blends, but I can't find many/any stockists in NI.

I like milk in my black tea, so green tea is a good travel tea (if I'm not sure I can get milk) and one of the Taylors of Harrogate green tea blends now always reminds me of misty mornings in Nepal...

Haven't seen that. Until recently the only rooibos I saw in shops was the one with the clock on the box (can't remember name) but have started to see more varieties.

Yes, Eleven O'Clock tea. Lidl (of all places!) has a few rooibos varieties, including an orange one. A client introduced me to the Dragonfly vanilla version, then found the earl grey one ... the flight added flavour takes away the somewhat rough edges from rooibos.

I'd endorse a nice cup of Assam as well.

Rooibush is nice for a caffeine-free drink (I have to have milk) and you can read Alexander McCall Smith's books at the same time to get into the mood.

I'm just about to drink a cup of Turkish apple and rosehip tea.

Excellent emporium. You should try their single estate chocolate range!

They have rooibush orange, vanilla or caramel. I'd rather it plain, really.

Indian masala tea (chai) is absolutely delicious, especially in winter. You can get masala chai teabags, and also a pricey rooibush chai which is very nice.

You might find something that you like at J.Allan Braithwaite Ltd of 6 Castle Street, Dundee. They have been coffee and tea merchants in Dundee since 1868. They are an independent company and ship quality teas and coffees all over the country and have regular customers outwith the UK.
They do mail order and you can call them on 01382 322693.
You may find something that suits your palate there.
    Good Luck,

    Heather

    Re: Tea

When i am working in my office, nothing beats a good cup of nambarries. Late at night a like a peppermint or lemon tea (by a brand i forget the name of, and typhoo respectively)

I used to be addicted to coffee but recently i have really gone off it (one too many bad cups i think) and have started drinking tea by the bucket load, around 8-10 cups a day. If you find a nice tea lynn let me know so i can give it a go, as i am sure tea is like coffee in the sence you can get instant, but its never as good as hand ground beans.

P.S You'll be getting nambarries at our tea and cakes section of sat!

    Re: Tea

Have to avoid the red label as I drank too much as a student... now an earl grey man as chaletmates will testify.

Have you tried the T-shop in neal Street, Covent Garden.

There is only one tea for me. It has to be Twinings Earl Grey , and not the organic version either (that seems to taste a bit soapy to me).

Doe anyone know of an Earl grey brand that has proper bergamot in it as opposed to the vague and unappetising "flavouring" listed amongst the contents?
