Some friends and I went as a crowd to see The Phantom Menace. I should explain we had a mutual acquaintance who was self-important, overweight, and ugly - the nickname “Jabba” occasionally got bandied around. He had a girlfriend who was not unlike him in many ways, but a little bit smaller. So when, during the chariot scene, Jabba the Hutt rolls onto the balcony with his before-then-unseen Hutt girlfriend/wife/concubine, as one we had one of those “don’t look at me or I’ll crack up” moments. Of course, we did, and thenceforth ruined the only decent sequence in the movie for everyone in the cinema...

    [NITPICK MODE ON]
Surely not the only decent scene - there was the three-way light sabre fight between Maul, Obiwan and Qui Gon (sp?).

The only things which sightly marred that fight were:
    • The constant cutting-away to see other less interesting things.
    • The rather daft way the fight ended.
    • The fact that every single other light sabre fight in the whole sextuplegy** seems pale in comparison.

    [NITPICK MODE OFF]

Sorry, but the actual best sci-fi film of 1999 (same year as TPM) took the mickey out of a major plot device in that scene, so I just find it funny.

    Remember?

[Gwen and Jason encounter the chompers]
Gwen DeMarco: What is this thing? I mean, it serves no useful purpose for there to be a bunch of chompy, crushy things in the middle of a hallway. No, I mean we shouldn't have to do this, it makes no logical sense, why is it here?
Jason Nesmith: 'Cause it's on the television show.
Gwen DeMarco: Well forget it! I'm not doing it! This episode was badly written!

Only change was George Lucas used force walls, instead of the usual machinery/axes/blades to delay Ewan's character for a crucial moment IIRC (I might not: only saw the film once).

Anyway, I was 10 when I watched Luke find out who his father was - you can't beat that moment with any amount of special effects

Kudos. Another of my favourite SF films.

I suppose I'm easily swayed by eye-candy. Even the chompy crushy things just looked....wonderful. Like the forcefields. And we have to face it - Starwars in general requires enough suspension of disbelief to satisfy a dozen trilogies...

First one has that kind of post-apocolyptic Aussie vibe (part 2)

Second one is from a modern reworking of a classic war movie. With chickens.

No idea what the obscure factor is though.

Yes - the obscure common factor is they both feature unexpected animals in unusual aircraft (remember the autogyro pilot's "bombs"?)

I have been thinking (dangerous I know) but Darth's suit is on big Iron lung, and they tried everything to stop him, lasers the force etc etc, and not one beat him. Did anyone consider using the force for the 'Off Switch'?

    I love Galaxy Quest.
At the last discworld convention that I attended (2002), Terry Pratchett was making sure that everyone he came across had seen GQ, he said that it should be compulsory viewing before attending any fan convention.

Neither I was wording it as I imagined the producers/writers seemed to see it.

    Um. OK.

    Another old favourite:

"Did you lose your mind all at once, or was it a slow, gradual process? "

"Where would King Arthur be without Guinevere?"
    "Happily married, probably."
    "Well, that's a bad... that's a bad example. "
