    Silly place names in Scotland

I love silly place names. To add to Cruden Bay there is also:

    1) The village of Dull in Perthshire.
    2) A place called Conundrum not far outside Berwick. No-one knows why, apparently.
    3) The village of Twatt in Orkney. No, I won't say it...
    4) In Sutherland, there are villages called Culkein and Drumbeg, and one called Culkein Drumbeg halfway between for people who couldn't make up their mind...

Anyone know any others? And how about examples beyond Scotland? The best one I know of is Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. It was named after a game show...

There's a place I passed somewhere near Dundee which is called Longforgan.

If you made it a silent 'f', you end up with Long Organ.

Which may mean something, or not...

It would then end up twinned with a place in East Yorkshire called Wetwang...

Well. If we're going outside of Scotland.

There is a place in the South East of London, called Pratt's Bottom.

Piddlehiton and Piddletrendide in the Dorset. Puddletown changed it's name from Piddle Town to save offending visiting royalty

Theres a place on the road to Aberdeen called Battle Dykes. To me this sounds like an American Lesbian Game Show.....

Or Throsk, which is outside Falkirk, sounds like a disease.

There's a place in Fife called "Menstruie."

Apparently, it's a right bloody hole.

Surprised John S didn't know this one. It's near Dumfie. If you drive around Dunfermline for a long period, you will find it.

:sorry :sorry :sorry :sorry :sorry :sorry :sorry :sorry :sorry :sorry

    (a) It's actually Menstrie
    (b) It's not in Fife
    (c) I know it well
    (d) I don't think it's a silly name

    Otherwise spot on, CJ!

I reckon Kilmahog is the best place name I have come across.
Followed a close second by DunKillin (sp?).

Tidying my books at the weekend, I rediscovered one by Douglas Adams which does exactly this: take place names which sound like they ought to mean something, then give them meanings for which there is no other word. It's called "The Meaning of Liff".

For instance, Ardsniglish (Highland village) becomes an adjective describing "the behaviour of Sellotape when you are tired".

Some of the words could even be useful at dancing: ladies could refuse a dance on the basis of a guy's wedderlairs (big sweat patches on his shirt), or his huby (an embarrassingly noticeable half-erection)...
