    Basketball - Whats the point?

Is there anybody out there who watches basketball?

Its on ESPN as I write this and it got me thinking. Every time I see basketball results it is ALWAYS close. For example the game thats on now is 58-57 to someone or other.

I have never seen a result along the lines of 87-16 to one team. It is invariably within a handful of points.
You could say football is the same but there is so much more to football. Lots of things to excite the crowd.

I really dont understand the point in it. Why not just make the entire match length 5 minutes and save all that other time.

ps. the score has now progressed onto an enthralling 63-62!

I played basketball for my school. (When I say 'played', I mean I went on court when the good players wanted a rest.)

We won the Wakefield area competition, and were then entered for the national schools cup. In the first round we drew Birkenhead (I think). We figured something was wrong when we arrived at their school - all they had were basketball courts. Their PE teachers were American. All their players were English schools internationals.

    They beat us 113 - 28.

I'd rather watch 5 minutes of an average basketball match than 5 minutes of an average football match...

Hey, you might as well ask what's the point of Amateur Cabarets!

Oh, but while we're here, can someone explain what the point of cricket is?

I think Douglas Adams did. Well, his is the only rational explanation I've ever read.

By the way, the point of basketball is to give the USA a global team sport they're actually good at (note to baseball: placing one franchise in Toronto doth not make it a "World" Series). Therefore I don't think we should ban it yet. We should ban it when hothouse parents start putting their 2 year olds on racks though.

In the car on the way to the office yesterday our Indian driver turned and told me he had been watching the world cup. He said he really enjoyed it and that its so much more exciting than cricket which seems to go on forever!

And this was from someone whose country holds cricket in such high regard

    Well impressed.

Budweiser are sponsoring ITVs World Cup coverage, and at the start of each ad break they have a spoof US sports show. It has 2 American presenters who haven't got a clue about football.
The funniest one so far is one of them running in with a piece of paper, and saying:
"Look at this! It's a World Championship, but they have more than one country taking part!"

They do tend to televise only the good teams - and basketball is a sport where, if your team is good enough you should score every time you get the ball...of course then when the other team has possession, they should score too...its the missed points, defensive heroics, 3 pointers , steals, fouls etc.. that make the points difference and make it a great game to watch. So a score of 82-80 might be close but it doesnt say anything about the 20 point deficit that the winning team got back or the dunk from the free throw line - Basketball is the ultimate spectator sport

I used to be in a team too. We got beaten by a team of girls once

I was never in a basketball team, but used to be reasonable at netball (until I ripped two ligaments in my right knee, no more netball). So several years ago, I got roped in as part of a 'scratch' basketball team from a youth club. We had our asses whupped by an equally 'scratch' team of disabled players in wheelchairs who usually played football - - they were FAST

ooh unfair - if you cant foul on purpose and intimidate the opposition its not proper basketball (mind you Id quickly not feel guilty when i found out they had no such qualms and kept running over my feet no doubt )
