I was wondering if anyone on the forum knew where to find the red squirrel colony at Formby. I visited Formby Point on the way to Southport in the hope of finding the colony but didn't spot any squirrels at all, nor did I find any information as to where to look. Am I looking in the wrong place? Can anyone help, as I'm booking another trip to Southport in September and would like to have another go.
Ta.

Whew, good thing you've got a grace period, huh?
As for squirrels - blimey, I didn't even get to the beach, and that's just down the road (£3 entrance fee tho )
Maybe we should have a "scenic delights of Southport" thread...
No - he's already posted, so that means his grace period is up...Originally Posted by DavidJames

The sign on Formby railway station for the squirrel sanctury was much bigger than the Formby sign.
Huh? They charge money to see the beach?!?!Originally Posted by DavidJames

They did at the one just down the road from Pontins - I guess they don't want the normal Pontins riff-raff (as opposed to the normal MJ riff-raff) to enjoy themselves or something...Originally Posted by ducasi
Re Southport - I haven't made it to the beach in years...never mind visit anywhere else!
We have red squirrels in our local forest park which is where I work, so get to watch them try to get nuts out of the bird feeder just outside the kitchen window.

Miss Conduct have walked to that beach everytime we've been to the June Southport and never paid anything. Is it a charge for cars?
Walked? Strange concept... Yes, it probably is a car charge, thinking about it.Originally Posted by Zebra Woman

The only problem is walking past people dancing on the deck and feeling tempted to dance - in flip flops.

100 years? Wow, that's a long walk. Or is there some weird space time thing going on at Southport (and if so is there any way to manipulate it to create sleeping time in another time zone so that I could literally dance all the time?)Originally Posted by Zebra Woman
Now don't get me wrong. IF you can dance well in flip flops I will be dead impressed.Originally Posted by Zebra Woman
If you can't dance at all, but you are going to give it your first try, then I think that flip flops is an utterly stupid choice of footwear.
As silly as wearing a pair of white court stilletos with 3 inch heels to visit a dairy farm. I was so embarrased. It ruined them and they are so difficult to get in my size.
Looks like a red squirrel to me...Originally Posted by Juju

Was the milk yield affected?
It was on the "Truth or Dairy" thread - didn't you see it?Originally Posted by Zebra Woman
Apparently there were some photos taken and I will let you see them if the police release them after my case is heard.Originally Posted by Zebra Woman
The milk yield was fine. The dairy maid declared herself most satisfied with that mornings production levels. It certainly showed me that dairy farming could be a rewarding and satisfying occupation.

Thanks for the link, FM. Seems I was in the right place but the little buggers decided on a no-show. "Playful red squirrels, often brave enough to scamper up close.... " Yeah, right! Perhaps it was because "...by the time their second mating season comes in summer, the birch and other deciduous trees are in full leaf, concealing the squirrels' treetop escapades." Maybe it's a blessing....
Interesting that a permanent local population has been established. The black rabbits which were present around here (and in my garden) last year have not reappeared this year. What with the farmer's gun and my dogs, a rabbit's life expectancy is not great in these parts. But that recessive black gene is there in the gene pool and will emerge visually from time to time, and place to place.Originally Posted by LMC
Anyone else watch "Autumnwatch"? Kate Humble went to Formby and they loved her. This is because she was smart enough to bribe them with a bag of nuts... in return for which they have given her fleas; you have been warned.
Btw, the beach is great. Don't think I've ever visited Southport without spending a part of each day just pottering about on the beach, watching the wildlife, and then tucking into a 'barm' and a cup of tea on the way back. Fab.
