    My Fish

Ok i couldn't find my other thread about my poorly fish, so thought i would do another. He/She has been poorly now for years, it started with a small lump in its mouth and has now spread into it body, it has to prop it's self under the pump or it will float to the top. Is there any SERIOUS advice anyone could give me as i really don't know what to do as it's got worse and the vets don't want to know.

I enclose a pic of how it is today

    The serious advice. . . .

and this is from me who's never serious if he can help it, is. . .
but before i found jive i too was a keeper of fish! I was referred to by my peers as one would have done so to a trainspotter. It was a hard time of my life!

Stick the fish and some of the tank water (not tap you know the score to have kept it 'years') in a quality bag (like a sandwich bag), seal it so there is plenty of air trapped in the top - seal with a rubber band is probably best and take it to your aquatic/fish shop. The bigger better places do keep the fish in and check em out - Shirley Aquatics do or did for example. Whether they will for a goldfish is a question but they will know how to help you.

    Good luck with bob!

Oh no! I feel for you, I love my fish dearly. Hope it gets better soon. Btw, when I got my fish tank at first about three fish died as there was not enough air, maybe it's something to do with that?

I doubt if it's to do with the pump, i have had my fish for 12 years and 6 of those it's got worse. I would very much doubt if it would get better as i think it's a tumor of some sort.

Thanks for your advice Trousers, im going to pop to my local aquatics and see what they can do. Funny as he is upside down all day but when it's feed time he goes mad swimming around the tank with the other fish. Im worried its going to burst, i dont think i could cope with that i would rather have tiput down but the vets just think im mad, i just love animals.

I will let you know what i find out at the weekend

Awwww your fish looks a wee bit sad

I think Trousers idea was tops

I was recently at Chambers street museum and saw that they have a big fish with a lump over its eye - maybe someone at the museum would know about 'lumps'.

let us know how your fish is - whats its name???

Is that the name of your fish? BOB?

Ahem, anyway, best take trousers advice, otherwise it will continue to er.. bob back up to the top!

However, the alternative option is, like everybody else does.... flush it down the toilet! (Nah just kidding!)

At 7 inches long i think it may just block the loo

I will have a word with the local aquatics and if i have to take it there i will, but being so big i will need assistance

7 inches?! That is a big one! Hope you get something sorted though. Sounds like a tumour to me. Can't be cancerous though as it would have died ages ago.

Missing the inuendo (just the once)

It had a lot to do with my ex-wife killing the two koi I had in a tank. I do honestly think it was an accident, no really i do, no i do! But after the demise of Bob and his friend Bob I sort of just let nature weed what was left namely Bob, Bob and Bob.

My tank still resides in her loft with all it's paraphanalia and no fish.

Long live all Bobs out there!

    Re: My Fish

If it had a lump, was it white? And is that the lump that has spread?

If so this could simply be 'White Spot' (imaginative name eh!) and is treatable with over the counter medication from you nearest aquatic centre.

You do say though that your fish keeps floating to the top if not wedged under plants etc... To me (none fish expert, but have kept quite a few in the past), that sounds like the swim-bladder...and as far as I'm aware and until somebody corrects me, that is not treatable Sorry.

    White spot - (treatable) good.
Swim bladder - (none treatable I think) bad.

Sorry if that's not what you want to read but hope it helps.

    Re: My Fish

    Hi Dee
Any more news on your fish?

If your fish can't control its buoyancy in the tank (either floats or sinks) then it is definitely its swim bladder. My fish had the same problem. If you feed your fish with fish flakes, the fish often gulp in air with their food. This causes a build up of air in its stomach causing the fish to have trouble keeping itself upright. I found that if you feed your fish with a thin slice of cucumber or lettuce leaf it tends to sink in the fish's stomach helping its buoyancy. Or for a treat feed them bloodworm (from pet shop) or live sea monkeys! They love it!! If that still doesn't help you can buy swim bladder treatment but the one I bought takes a long time to do.

I don't know anything about the lump but if the fish is still eating and swimming then I would just leave it.

    Hope that helps!!

    Re: My Fish

Thats great advise Dancingdee, but on this occasion im almost certain it's a tumor. It started years ago with a small lump in it's mouth that over time just got bigger, i guess it has slowly spread down into it's body where it's causing all sorts of problems it's happily feeding so will just see how it goes. I spoke to a friend who works in the lab department in a vets, he asked someone about the fish, they said if i wanted to put it to sleep to put it in a bowl and add Andrews liver salts which would kill it quickly i don't like animals suffering but still could not do this myself. Time will tell, but if it does get any worse i may have to do just that.

    Will keep you posted
