Exclamation Message for contact lense wearers!

This article was in the Metro last week - helpfully, my Opticians didn't bother to alert their customers, it appears we have to find out for ourselves! They did however exchange the existing solutions for a new product.

'A poular contact lens cleaner has been taken off the shelves amid fears that it could be linked to a dangerous eye infection.

Manufacturer Bausch & Lomb withdrew ReNu MoistureLoc solution after a rise in Fusarium infections in users.

The cases were discovered in Hong Kong, Singapore and the US.

Some aspect of the MoistureLoc formula may be increasing the relative risk of Fusarium infection

Fusarium infections cause inflammation of the cornea, the front part of the eye.

Symptoms include redness, blurred vision, discharge, swelling, tearing, pain and increased sensitivity to light. In severe cases it can cause permanent blindness.

Investigators have yet to discover the reason for the rise, but a company spokesman admitted it could not rule out a link to the product and a disproportionate number of those infected had used the product.

The British regulatory authority advised users to stop using the product.

Bausch & Lomb chief executive Ronald Zarrella said: 'After an extensive investi- gation involving thousands of tests, there is no evidence of product contamination, tampering, counterfeiting or sterility failure.

'That leads us to conclude that some aspect of the MoistureLoc formula may be increasing the relative risk of Fusarium infection in unusual circumstances.'

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority advised users to dispose of any remaining stocks of the solution'.

BUT please note that Baush and Lomb voluntarily withdrew the product, and there is still no suggestion that any of the eye infections have been linked with the product in any but a loose statistical way; that is, more of those with infected eyes have been using Renu with MoisturLoc than users of other fluids.

To put it another way, plenty of people using other products have also got the same infection.

For some people, Specsavers own contact lenses can also cause this infection, I suffered with it for about a year before a friendly Dolland & Atchison optician finally figured out why!
