Why does an alarm clock "go off" when is really going on?
Why don't you ever see baby pigeons?
Why is it called a "building" when it is already built?
Why is Mickey Mouse bigger than his dog Pluto?
Would a fly without wings be called a walk?
I knew the bit and good luck / bad luck - didn't know about the Break a leg bit thank youOriginally Posted by Rhythm King

Leroy (Satchel) Paige (1906-1982)
Mickey Mouse's girlfriend, Minnie, made her film debut, along with Mickey, in "Steamboat Willie" on November 18, 1928.
That date is recognized as her official birthday.

How is it one careless match can start a forest fire, but it takes a whole box to start a campfire?

Why is it when you look in mirror everything is left right reversed, but not upside down
you invent the perpetual motion machine - all you have to do is put it in a box and it will last forever: cheap and infinite source of energy!Originally Posted by Gojive

My understanding is the effect is really in the brain. Briefly: mirrors actually reverse back to front (reflection in Z). But 99% of the time, the way we see the side of an object that a mirror shows us is by a vertical 180 degree rotation (equivalent to a reflection in both X and Z). E.g. if we use a mirror to see an object behind us, the "normal" way for us to see it involves us turning our head 180 degrees.Originally Posted by philsmove
The result is that our brain auto adjusts for the 180 degree rotation, leaving us interpreting the final result as a reflection in X (left-to-right).

Apologies for not being ESG but here is a link to an explanation: Mirror problemOriginally Posted by stewart38
I would also like to point out that this question is off-topic as it is entirely sensible. Consideration of how we see things in mirrors can give insight into how our visual system filters reality.
Edit: to DF. Didn't see your answer before I posted.
Sorry how does this help understand the question?Originally Posted by David Franklin

If you mean specifically "why left-to-right rather than up-down?", it's because of the preferred (vertical) axis for rotation.Originally Posted by Msfab
