I think that the motivation to practice is the key difference between just practicing, and practicing for a competition...

    Re: Your level of dancing

Just to clarify, as the originator of this thread: I don't mean to imply that competing makes you better than those who don't compete, or that someone who dances every night is better than the once-a-week beginner. The poll isn't about making value judgements, but more about finding out where people on this forum are with relation to their motivation, commitment, level of experience etc. And yes, ability does come into it, but it's not solely about that.

Mind you, after I put the competition option on the poll, I was expecting a few posts from the "competitions are evil" crew.

I know that doing competitions doesn't automatically make you a better dancer, but I do agree with Donna that (in most cases) it gives you the motivation to work on your dancing and to improve.

That's exactly what I was going to say, thanks Baruch. Competitions encourage me to practice more so therefore improve a lot quicker. I'm sure it's the same for other competitors also. If I wasn't entering competitions, I know for a fact I wouldn't know half of what I know now. I most probably wouldn't have bothered either.

I have a small Acer in my garden, which gets partial shade. Over the last two years, the leaves quickly go yellow at the edges and curl up. What can i do to stop this?

    Re: Your level of dancing

Oops! Didn't realize it was multiple choice til after I'd voted so I went for Totally Addicted, coz even though I don't actually dance every night (I only get to do that twice a week ) it's not because I don't want to - I really would go every single night if I could!! And ... YES I do dance in my sleep (well, I'm almost always thinking about it as I'm trying to drop off and I do dream about it, anyway), while I'm photocopying, cooking dinner (I get a lot of 'what the hell are you doing?'s from hubby!), 'walking', typing etc etc and an awful lot of the time I'm not doing it in some form or another is spent thinking, writing or talking about it. I have absolutely no hesitation, and indeed am proud, to stand up and be counted among the addicted!! (Doesn't necessarily mean I'm that good at it though!)

I think the answer to your original question lies in the fact that a fair few forumites do indeed dance in their sleep, both through dreams and literally

I'm guessing this is not exactly typical behaviour and so Forumites are indeed atypical.

Oh and we're all pretty much hopelessly addicted at this point too, which is again probably not the norm.

Shouldn't the Acer be moved into the sunlight and watered more?

Total addict and trying constantly to improve. I dance most nights now I should probably devote just as much time to my degree...I dance almost anywhere as well (there's been times when I've been shopping and people have moved slowly away from me )

Ok i'm happy being a social dancer who tries to improve style and technique. Doesn't sound right when put like that does it?

Why not? There's nothing wrong with trying to improve as a social dancer. I wish more would take that attitude.

Much better than being an anti-social dancer

But I agree with Baruch - a social dancer trying to improve sounds like a great person to dance with

    Take care,

I voted for being a complete addict because if I could Afford it (Cough...Poor Student...cough) and if there was more oppertunity in aberdeen I would dance more than my usual 2 nights! Also voted for improving my style coz tho i no longer feel like a complete beginner I do feel worse than useless on the dancfloor sometimes!

You mean, more opportunity than the 3 nights that there are in Aberdeen currently?

And of course, Brechin is only 40 miles away on a Friday (you owe me for that plug, Lorna), and Dundee is only 65 miles away on a Monday. If you were a complete addict, then an hours travelling in either direction is counted as nothing!

(Of course, we'll let you off while you are a student!)
