The M1 roadworks are already causing some long delays for us northerners, I spent over 45 minutes in stationary northbound traffic last Wednesday night at midnight! Worse still, Captain Fantasic Rebecca and I had to use the A1 to get down to the last T jive, because the M1 was completely blocked.
I thought this thread would be useful for sharing handy hints, not just on the M1 but generally.
I have Three TOP TIPS
1. RAC traffic information straight to your phone, a cool way to beat the jams:
Dial 1740 from your mobile, works for T mobile, maybe another number if you have a different network.
You enter 1 for live traffic info,
1 for Motorway, 2 for A roads,
Then enter the road number. Simple, only 60p a minute, and it can all be done in less than a minute. Well worth it to avoid a long delay IMO.
2. Observe the speed limit. There will be cameras installed to calculate your average speed through the 40mph roadworks zone.

The cameras are nearly in place.
3. Dunstable Speed Camera. If you leave the M1 at Junct 9 and use the A5 north through Dunstable, there is a speed camera as you emerge from Dunstable. It is on a fast bit of road and you are flowing down a slope and...but it's a 40MPH LIMIT. Don't say I didn't warn you.
Too late for me
Any more tips?

TOP TIPS for Traffic Congestion.
My best and favourite tip is AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS.
Its such a waste of time.
Hope this helps.
These are becoming more and more common.Originally Posted by Zebra Woman
But IMO it's the fault of drivers: recently a stretch of M42 had a 40mph speed limit through roadworks - and no cameras. I stuck to 40 and watched loads of drivers zooming by, totally ignoring the speed limit.
So these days if they want to keep roadworks safe for drivers and the people working behind the cones, by keeping speeds down, it seems the only way is to install cameras. It's a bit sad really.
Love dance, will travel
