Room heater? You spend time in your room?Originally Posted by under par
I would like to do about 10 weekenders a year. At most 5 of these would be MJ. I would like 2 West Coast swing weekenders and a further 3 Blues weekenders. I also want Beach Boogie which is an absolute must. I would like another week long dance holiday but, alas I don't have much more holiday available and my partner also likes an occasional holiday that is hot and doesn't involve dancing.
My priorities are
1) Quality of the teachers and the lessons. The lessons must extend or refine my skills or it just doesn't do it for me. So this is top priority for me. Wall to wall freestyle on a weekender is not my main aim as I already dance 5 nights a week so loads of freestyle is not as important as its quality. Fortunately the quality of dance partners on weekenders is usually higher than a normal club night.
2) Space on a good dance floor. If you have great lessons and great dance partners (as weekenders seem to attract) then there is little enjoyment that I can get with them dancing in the space of a broom closet while people crash into us. Again, fortunately, the standard of floorcraft at weekenders if generally better than at normal club nights.
3) A wide range of excellant music. When I go away on a weekender I am not interested in hearing everything that I can hear on my other 5 nights a week out. I would much prefer rooms which each have their own themes so that I can go to them as my mood changes rather than one main hall where the mix of music is very wide. That said, whenever I am at a weekender I am almost always in the swing and blues room. The music in the main room no longer interests me now.
4) Distance. I don't want such a long drive to an event that I arrive thoroughly tired before I start or that I end up going back to work with no chance to recover. Having to take the friday off in order to travel mean that I have to take two days of my precious holiday time off rather than just one. It also means that in the 4 days I end up spending two of them driving so only half of my time is spent having fun. So a maximum of 3.5 hours drive from work to event on a friday night.
5) Gender balancing. No you might think that I would like being outnumbered by women but it is really dispiriting seeing women who are standing glumly wanting to dance and there are just not enough men to go around. I also find that I want to take some time out to rest but I feel bad because there are women about that still want to dance.
That is pretty much it for me. I have always made myself comfortable in any accomodation that I have found myself in and I am either out dancing or asleep so I don't spend much time looking around. Any event that I have been on has always meant that there are people there that I like to see so I don't feel I have to have a posse of people guarranteed to be there.

As competitions seem to take up most of our time (and money!) it is difficult for us to get to weekenders. However, we have booked up for the Big Bang in Weston-Super-Mare in April, because it is on our doorstep and the quality of the teaching should be excellent!
The only other one we have been to (in the past two years! ) was Paignton last month. It was organised by the Cardiff Dance Club and was an excellent week-end, spent with good friends in a beautifully warm hotel! I believe that Mark and Jackie have booked it again for next year!

I'm always in the mood to book a weekender when I'm just back from one and I remember how good an experience it is. Just booked Breeze - based on...
Cost - this was the deciding factor - cheap accomodation and cheap flights available. I'm not mean, I'm on a tight budget.
Well organised - I'm going by Storm, I expect the same standards at this event.
Daytime freestyling - I'm sure this was mentioned somewhere for Breeze...
Tango 'extra' - there may or may not be any on the weekend itself but I can travel over on Thurs and go to Tango in Bristol.
And an additional reason - I've never been dancing in that area - I'm sure there are some lovely dancers there and it will be nice to try somewhere new.
The choice is getting harder, there's so many nowOriginally Posted by Lory
