The man is a midget, and can only reach the button for the 7th floor, except when it's raining, when he uses his umbrella to reachthe button for his floor.

    Correct

3 - What was the UK Prime Ministers name in 1982 ?
It was still Tony Blair, even then.

    So. Lessee....

4 guys are stood on one side of a chasm, over which is a very decrepit wooden bridge. Due to injuries they are carrying, they can all cross the bridge in varying times.

One can cross in 10 mins
One can cross in 5 mins
One can cross in 2 mins
One can cross in 1 min

They can only cross 2 at a time, since the bridge looks like it's going to fall in any time. And, they only have one torch between them, and the people crossing need to carry the torch, as the slats are missing in places on the bridge.

What's the minimum length of time it'll take for all 4 to get across the bridge.

I've got it down to 19 mins with the 1 minute man crossing 6 times to carry the torch,.......however this is probably totally wrong as I am crap arithmetic..and I'm sure I'll be suitably embarassed when the right answer is printed

The other possibility is that the 10 minutes guy could cross holding the torch, and the others could just go one after the other while he's doing so, giving ten minutes total. However, I'd personally have gone for DD's solution.

You can do it in less than 19 minutes.

    Keep thinking

    Ok,

2 min and 1 min cross together. = 2 minutes
    1 min comes back. = 3 minutes
    10 mins and 5 mins together = 13 minutes
    2 mins comes back = 15 minutes
2 mins and 1 mins together = 17 minutes total.

I can get them across in seventeen minutes. Is there a better solution?

Nope. 17 minutes is the best solution. Well done to those who got it...

Monica wins a race due to her speed and agility, yet she is not allowed to receive the winner's trophy. Everyone, including the race officials, saw her win, and she has not been disqualified.

Why can't she receive the trophy?

I can think of 2 options...

    - It was part of the Ceroc champs, and she won the previous year (and therefore not allowed to win this year)???

    - She is a horse. The jockey/owner get the trophy

    David,

    Your second answer is correct.

Okay, here's another. A man is found hanging from a hook in a locked room. His feet dangle one meter above the floor (which is flat) and there is no furniture in the room. The verdict is suicide, but how did he accomplish it?

Sorry - I should have said he was hanging by a rope round his neck, and that the rope was attached to the hook (on the ceiling).

Well, there's nothing to say that he died from hanging, so I guess he could have shot himself and the gun was still in his hand with a suicide note on the floor?

However, I haven't figured out how he got onto the hook - a brilliantly-timed superhero leap from the overlooking minstrel's gallery, with the rope already tied around his neck ready to attach to the hook, seems a tad unlikely.

Seems a bit obvious, but did he stand on a block of ice - which subsequently melted, leaving a pool of water on the floor for the coronor's verdict?

As Graham never mentioned a pool of water being there you must have known the full Question and therefore the answer in advance ...and no one is impressed
