I hated the Kempston Joystick too big - i had a programmable comcon joystick interface too and a slik stick joystick - the kempston interface had to be supported directly by the game!

    Youre still famous though

You definately are a celeb then. I was a Spectrum playing schoolkid. You didn't design it with withstanding Daley Thompsons Decathlon in mind though eh!

Was it true that you'd blow up your spectrum if you plugged or unplugged the joystick interface with the power turned on?

I don't know about the blowing up the interface story. It is possible.
I don't know much about the Speccy. I was selling Video Genie then Dragon 32 computers. The Kempston Joystick was 2 1/2 hours work filling in a very slack wet Wednesday afternoon to design the interface, write the demo program and design the marketing strategy. That was the tricky bit. Why buy a joystick if no games were written to use it? Why program the games if nobody had a joystick? Catch 22.
The first few dozen Kempston Joysticks were miserable specimens from a bankrupt TV game manufacturer. From that poor beginning it became the standard for a while.
Like Ceroc itself. You can start out small, with a good idea. Really work at it and who knows where it ends?
