    Red face Name that thing

I know it is a girly thing, but I always give my car a name - my current baby is called Nick (has something to do with the reg as it is NK )

My GPS is Nicky, or Little Nick

Haven't named my laptop, might be an idea, it is better than saying "You stupid thing" or words like that

Does any one else name their car or gadgets etc.

Mickey Mouse's girlfriend, Minnie, made her film debut, along with Mickey, in "Steamboat Willie" on November 18, 1928.
That date is recognized as her official birthday.

I have named my (newly borrowed) piano "The Pope", because he's a fat bugger, and by the time the crew had finished manoevering him up the stairs I felt like releasing white smoke from the chimney and making a statement from an upstairs window (in lieu of a balcony.)

Oh, and my computers are called Lydia and Clytemnestra.

There's something about naming things like cars, computers or instruments - if they play an important part of our lives, anthropomorphising them makes the time spent driving, sitting at the desk or playing music feel less lonely. So my examples are:

I used to have a car called Clottie (because it was white and stodgy and came from Devon).

Also all my musical instruments have/have had names - my piano Janette, my old violin Joanna (given by the previous owner, but I kept it), my new violin Marta, my viola Bernard and my (Spanish) guitar Angelo. Haven't named my keyboard yet though - I think that might be because it obviously has no personality

And of course all my teddy bears have names, even though I got most of them when I was in my late teens...

    Re: Name that thing

Call me boring, but I don't name my things...

OK, so all the things on my computer network have names, but that's only because it's difficult to remember which one is 10.0.0.3 and which one is 10.0.0.5.

My laptop is called "Palm", my printer is called "Miami" and my Mac is called "Copacabana". Can you see the theme?

But I normally refer to them as "my laptop, my printer and my mac".

I did name my phone "Sexy Phone", mainly because it was sexy, but there was also an ulterior motive... Can you guess why?

    Bluetooth device listing?

My iBook is called Yuna; my evil PC Lulu and my slightly less evil PC Tidus. Err... my iPod Shuffle is called Moogle. OK all devices on my network and such have silly names.

    Re: Name that thing

I changed cars last year, same make and model, just the latest version. When the new car arrived, there were a few little issues with getting things sorted the way I wanted them, which I had been used to on the previous one (Euge, or Eugenia - from the reg no, BTW). We had a little settling down period, whilst I got used to it. Subsequently not only did he become a he rather than a she, but just became known as "Car". Car definitely has a personality and seems to have preferred passengers. To this end, Car has an invisible "reserved" sign on the front passenger seat.

My motor bike was already named when I got it - "Carbo-Trump". This is from its special Carbon fibre bodywork and the fact that it's a Triumph, which are known colloquially as Trumpets

At my flying club there are two identical aeroplanes, yet I much prefer one to the other. They are just machines, but they do seem to have different personalities. Odd, isn't it?

    Re: Name that thing

My car usually gets called "a piece of ****" when it's messing me about because I haven't bonded with it and I don't like it. I know it gets me from AtoB and will probably go horribly wrong just to spite me so I have to say it under my breath whilst revving the crap out of it. My beautiful new laptop doesn't have a name but I do stroke it and tell it that it's lovely.

If you've ever done any NLP, that's referred to as perception is projection. You see one plane as being better, so it is.

Just thought i'd drop that into the conversation.

After pondering i did have a car once that the gf referred to as Hughey, more because the number plate ended HWY. Does that count. I still referred to it as the car.

Talking of which i did see a car with the number plate T000LD (T00 0LD) how cool is that?

Thank you, I figured as much... Clearly not as boring as Mostlysane though, who must think in numbers...

And, killingtime, you got it – my sexy phone is a honey-pot for cool bluetoothed content. You get to see some interesting things...
