Aw... No fair, you're spoiling all my fun.

Actually, it's not THAT off topic. Because I've commented before that there are very few MJ showcases where I didn't think the music would be fun to dance to. So...

What is it with salsa showcases and the music? Is there so little appealing salsa music that everyone has to use the same 5 tracks? Or is it just some salsa mafia thing? And the only escape seems to be to do a 2 minute intro to some completely unsuitable piece of music (preferably a movie soundtrack); but hey, that's OK, 'cos you weren't going to dance salsa to it anyway! Particular respect to the couple at the Mayan competition who just walked around and waved fake pistols around for the first 90 seconds...

Can't claim the credit for it - it's been around for years

If by appealing, you mean "suitable for interpretation", then yeah, I reckon 5's about right. Maybe 6... And they've been around for up to 40 years.

Don't ask me about salsa music, it's just getting worse and worse IMO.

No, really, there are some truly lovely salsa tracks, but most of them are incredibly similar. Or too fast. Or just cr&p...

    Re: Dance or the Music

Dancing with good dancers and doing several very good workshops has been what's moved me on I think. I've come on most by dancing with people who take the time to go through moves with me and constructively explain where I've gone wrong. If I've done something wrong I like to learn how to get it right. I've got to have confidence in my partner too(because I've got none) and get comfortable with their moves. this also helps because I don't mind making a prat of myself in front of them.
However the music is very important to me because I like DJs who take the time to find really good tracks, rather than just playing what everyone else does. These days it seems to be hard to find and I often think I'm not dancing to that!! I miss dancing with people who interpret the music really well and encourage me to do the same.

Well David, you know how when someone farts in a room and you look around and - since you know it wasn't anyone else - it *must* have been you?....
