I’ve noticed on a number of occasions when someone make a comment or an opinion about dancing someone pops up and says well could you do better.?
Is this peculiar to this forum or dancing
All people are doing are expressing opinions
If I said my football team are crap i.e. Luton Town it would just be an opinion and if someone said ‘well could you play better then any of them I have to say no’. Does that make my opinion less ?
If someone then said to me well Luton Town have just been promoted it would seem to make my ‘opinion’ sound more silly and probably be dismissed even if it was still my ‘opinion’. I could be comparing Luton to Chelsea
My opinion may have more credence if I was as national team football coach then someone who didn’t play much above low Sunday league level
So in a nut shell how do we measure someone’s a opinion
Do we care

Whatever you're talking about, an all encompassing comment such as "Luton Town are crap" is a pretty stupid comment to start with. Crap compared with what? Why do you think so?
There is a politeness issue. I might think Luton Town are crap, but if I knew your dad was the Manager, it would be a bit rude of me to say so. On a MJ dance forum, describing particular MJ dancers as crap is similarly rude in my opinion.
As far as "could you do better?". It does make a difference whether you are part of the "community" under discussion or not, particularly if you're not going to justify your comments. If I were to say "Tim Henman is crap", I wouldn't expect to be challenged about my tennis ability. If Greg Rusedski said the same thing, he would get no end of flack.
But justifying your opinion with specifics and avoiding emotionally loaded terms like "crap" is also going to give you a lot more credibility. For example, I don't like Victor da Silva's cabarets because he never gets his arms straight on overhead lifts and it really grates on me. He's won the world exhibition title three times now - the judges clearly disagree. But I'd still stand by my opinion. My opinion may have more credence if I was as national team football coach then someone who didn’t play much above low Sunday league level.
Imagine a deaf physicist permanently in a wheelchair. He (or she) has never danced, and never will. He sees a beginner lady wobbling as she spins. He writes "Suggest that she wears a fullish heavy skirt."Originally Posted by stewart38
It is not a question of "Can you do better?", but "Do you know how it can be done better?".

I've heard dancers comment positively on the gyroscopic benefits of such skirts, so he wouldn't be alone.Originally Posted by bigdjiver
