My brother just got me "The day I swapped my dad for two goldfish" for my birthday: brilliant - kid wants the goldfish, so swaps his dad for them. (duh!) Mum comes home and tells him to just swap them back again. He then finds that the person he swapped has alresdy swapped him for somthing else... and so on. Nice kick at the end.

Logan came home with another excelent one from school nursary: "Claydon was a clingy child": a kid and his teddie always hiding behind their mother's leg - the mother is into extreme sports "but it's safer here" says Clayton. "Nice though your mother may be," says the teady, "She's a nutter!" {well perhaps not in those exact words.} Again, a cool ending.

There is also the classic Dr Zeus books: Of course they are the ones they want read when you are in a rush: you try saying "six sick chicks toc" at any speed! "Please sir, I don't like these games you play sir: they make my tounge quite lame sir!"

"The Hungry Caterpillar", "Not now Bernard", and "We're going on a Bear Hunt" are classics.

My favorite was "I want my potty" but they have brought out a whole series now!!!

But there is a book that i have seen in Ottakers for pre schoolers. its about a day in the life of a sperm! It tells you all about the mating process. It was actually quite scary to see the book! I mean, there is teaching them young and teaching them young!!!

Oh , there is also "The Gruffallo" and "Where the wild things are"...

I don't know if it's strictly pre-school, but unparalleled, in my opinion, is The Little Worm Book by Janet an Allan Ahlberg.

Not having kids, this subject is a big blind spot for me.

However, a friend of mine from Dundee grew up on "Katie Morag". I know nothing of the books but she goes misty eyed when she recalls them. I am told the full emotional impact only happens when they are read out loud by someone with an "authentic" island accent (accent, what accent?).

Please contribute to this thread so it gives me lots of book ideas for my two nephews.

My elder son loved these stories too, prior to becoming a teenager and developing an aversion to anything written, that didn't involve skateboards or drums

Two favs of mine are "The Rainbow Fish" Marcus Pfister and "Room On The Broom" Julia Donaldson.

Another great one for boys (no wee girls in this house so not sure if they'd like it too) is "The Haunted House" Jan Pienkowski - we had to buy a new one as all of the pop-ups got worn out from over use

My son was once asked at school what his favourite book was and embarrassingly he answered the Argos book!

I quite like "When I'm Big" by Debi Gliori

My son is 14 now though, and its been a while since I taught nursery children but can highly recommend the Mr Men and Little Misses series of books!

And my P3 class love Horrid Henry books! (Which are great fun for me to read out to them too - cos I can shout at times and make them jump - hee hee)
