For both leaders and followers:
1 - Try to be light on your feet. The heavier you are on your feet (and by this I am not referring to an individual's weight) the harder it will be for you to move quickly in time with the music. This does not mean 'bounce'. Under no circumstances should you stamp your feet, this could lead to serious injury to your knees and feet.
2 - Try not to over-extend your arms or lock your elbows. This makes moves uncomfortable and can lead to injury. It also can make leads harder to follow and gives the dance a jerky appearance that is unpleasant.
3 - Always maintain a loose but connected hand hold. Beginner teachers will frequently say "don't use your thumbs" - they do this for a very good reason. You should never need to grip your partner.
I haven't mentioned the obvious: smile, enjoy it blah blah blah... because everyone else has
