Don't you think that sometimes you expect too much from a dance to a favourite track? I mean.. there are certain tracks that I just love dancing to, and it adds extra pressure on so that often the dances end up seeming less than 'quality'. They're probably just as good as other dances I have: but the height of my expectation affects my perception.

I'm sure this is true. The first time I danced to "All That Jazz" was at the Glasgow 10th Anniversary Party, and it was such a wonderful dance (thank you, Carole) that now whenever I hear it I rush onto the dancefloor with some unsuspecting lady and expect to hit the same high spots as I did then. It never quite works out that way, but hey that's true of so many things where the first time is always the best.

Anyway, how much further off-topic can this thread go before Franck notices???

Ah, yes..'All that Jazz' I had one of 'those' dances to it at Camber, and then refused to dance to it again all that weekend on the basis that it was unrepeatable...but then I had another lovely dance to it (er..lovely for me that is) with DavidB at Blackpool...*happy sigh*

Have you ever thought of just giving it all up and travelling to a far-off land to raise goats?

I said I had not had a good dance to "Fever" in 7 years.

Emma asked : Don't you think that sometimes you expect too much from a dance to a favourite track? I mean.. there are certain tracks that I just love dancing to, and it adds extra pressure on so that often the dances end up seeming less than 'quality'.

In context: We were discussing rejected invitations. I do not reject, but sometimes I am tempted. It is just coincidence that when "Fever" has come on a (struggling) beginner has asked me to dance, usually a reciprocation. Nothing to do with expectation.
I like rock'n'roll too. We rarely get one on a class night. The last time Chuck launched into "Sweet little sixteen" a first timer invited me. Bless her, she could follow me! Every jive night has been a good night. Dozens of happy memories for every odd moment of disappointment.

My comment was off context. Definitely. My brain tends to work like that...and it just occurred to me, that 'perfect track' thing. Not particularly about rejecting partners at all.

Next time I'll start a new thread, or something *shudder*

I know what you mean about dances not living up to expectation. When I was a beginner there was a superb dancer at Fulham that I admired - sinuous and sensuous, able to improvise to the music. I never asked her to dance, she was out of my class. Years later I saw her again at the Casbah. I asked her to dance, now feeling more her equal. Being accepted grudgingly is worse than rejection. She wheeled out all the "I do not want to dance with you" body language. I struggled on, strutting my best stuff, and near the end of the dance it percolated that she was dancing with a guy big enough and good enough to do the moves she liked, and she desperately tried to undo the damage and interact. By this time the dance was nearly over and event I had looked forward to for years had been ruined.
It works the other way too. The same night I danced with a young lady who was making her visit to the Casbah. She was really enjoying herself, but in the crush I clipped her on the nose. No harm done, but the dance was spoiled for both of us.
Once again, there were many good moments to compensate, but I never went back there again, mostly because I need space.

I think there's a big difference between turning people down cos you are a big-headed twat (not a valid reason) or cos you know the person to be a sleazy sod or a mad man-eating wench or cos your leg has fallen off (seem valid reasons to me!). I know Graham was turned down by a girl who sat at our table at Blackpool saying the record was too fast but she didn't ask back later and I think that's a tad arrogant. Come on 3 minutes of her precious time !!!!

I remember as a beginner being terrified to ask people like Roy or Bill cos I was as tense as an ironing board and couldn't follow very well - I know Graham, honey, not much has changed!!) and luckily they never turned me down and I walked off the floor thinking I was Ginger Rogers !!! Thank you !!

Like DV says we need you guys so that we can get better. And it could just be that you end up wanting to dance with us a few months down the line !!

Hi bigjiver !!! Fever you say..... 7 years..... I have a "friend" who'd like to dance that one with you London maybe ???? She recommends a few dances first to break the ice though...

I went to a party last night.....

I asked one "lady" to dance and she said she was having a break. Fair enough. I sat down and then she got up and walked of to find someone else. She spent the rest of the night avoiding me. I thought it was funny. I asked one of the local Cerocers what the deal was and she told me that this particular person was well known for doing this....

    choose one from:
    a) She does not know me very well
    b) Be careful what you wish for.
    c) To dance Fever properly you need to dance lots together. Work out some choreography. Practice it. The, about five minutes before you get engaged, dance it.

My guess is that I will not be in London next until the champs, and anyway, it would be a disappointment for her.

Odd how this particular lady gets around the world - she was at a Glasgow party a few months ago, and did exactly the same thing.

Had I been a "new" dancer I would probably have been put off for life, but fortunately I'm well past the "new" stage.

I too have been a victim of the 'you're just a beginner ' look !! I went to Glasgow one evening, with the Lovely Heather. I did the beginners class but was too busy chatting to the lovely Brady and didn't do the intermediate class. Later when I asked a man to dance I got that look and he grudgingly agreed to dance with me. It slowly dawned on him as we dance that perhaps he had made an error of judgment and maybe I wasn't a dreaded' beginner' after all! As a member of the Dundee MAd Crew I regularly go to Glasgow parties where I have a brilliant time and get some great dances!!
THAT man has now asked ME to dance and I accepted with a smile on my face, he was trying very hard, but first impressions are not easily changed!

She obviously did not know she was refusing a UK Jive Champion!

I have to butt in here.
The word dreaded begginer etc is annoying me.

It should be considered an honour to dance with a begginer because as a guy that is when you learn to lead well.
As a rule I won't do a move unless I can lead it with a begginer and love dancing with begginers because you are more likely to get a look of enjoyment of them. The old I don't believe I can dance this well look.

Plus the old rule of dance with them when they are beggining and they will ask you when they are good is true and there are now plenty of good dancers who seek me out because I asked them in there first few weeks.

The reverse is also true there are plenty of ladies I ask, because they danced with me when I was beggining.

begginng is a short lived time and as an experienced or intermediate we should consider ourselves privilidged to dance with begginers not put out or doing them a favour.

QUOTE]It should be consider an honour to dance with a begginer[/QUOTE] Couldn't agree more, it's true we were all begginers once and as a taxi dancer in both Perth and Dundee I spend a lot of my time dancing with beginners and really enjoy seeing them progress
Visited any more casinos recently Peter? When are you coming to see us again in Dundee??
