Surely PM's should remain private. Is it not bad etiquette to mark someone's private message to you?Originally Posted by Gadget
reputation is reputation: whether the comment that swayed you to repute a person is made in public or private, shouldn't matter; should it?
How do you give someone rep points via a PM though? I've looked and the "cabbage" thingy isn't there on PM's, or do you just mean via another thread, but refer to the PM in the comments boxOriginally Posted by Gadget
Yup - the last bit: OK, so you're not reputing the specific post you add reputation for, but the person being reputed still gets the points.
what if that person is of ill-repute ? If you were to be associated with adding to that reputation wouldnt your own reputation suffer too by the association ? Its starting to sound most seedy.....Im voting for McGregor my reputation can stand itOriginally Posted by Gadget
Just noticed this forum doesnt work very well in Opera, several smilies are missing
You keep your nasty blue votes to yourselfOriginally Posted by Dreadful Scathe
The always start off small, they slip you one at a party, then down the pub, then in the car on the way home. Before you know it you can't live without those smurfy reputation points - you want them all the time. They're all you can think about - will I get more votes? People stop being human, they're just votes.

The thread is a discussion of the new 'reputation' feature
I've just trawled right through the thread and realised there isn't actually an explanation of the feature (it's buried somewhere in the 'new forum software thread' so here goes:
The feature allows members of the forum to 'approve' or 'disapprove' of another member's post, thus adding to their reputation. The little green pips under people's names give an indication of how good someone's reputation is (the more pips the better). You can approve or disapprove of posts anonymously by clicking on the set of scales under someone's name next to their post. You can also leave a comment, which is anonymous (though admin and moderators can read them and see who has commented, so be nice!). If you click on your *own* scales you can see how many reputation points you have, and what the opinion is on the particular post you have clicked on.
Another thing to know is that members who have been on the forum longer and/or have more posts add more points when 'repping' - eg someone who has only posted a few times might have only one point to give whereas mega posters like Steve are worth sucking up to .
Lastly (will it ever end?) if you rep someone's post then you cannot rep them again until you have repped a whole bunch of other people first. (I hope you appreciate the grammatical beauty of that last sentence! )
Anyway, hope that helps ...Or would you like directions to another post?
