I've just trawled right through the thread and realised there isn't actually an explanation of the feature (it's buried somewhere in the 'new forum software thread' so here goes:

The feature allows members of the forum to 'approve' or 'disapprove' of another member's post, thus adding to their reputation. The little green pips under people's names give an indication of how good someone's reputation is (the more pips the better). You can approve or disapprove of posts anonymously by clicking on the set of scales under someone's name next to their post. You can also leave a comment, which is anonymous (though admin and moderators can read them and see who has commented, so be nice!). If you click on your *own* scales you can see how many reputation points you have, and what the opinion is on the particular post you have clicked on.

Another thing to know is that members who have been on the forum longer and/or have more posts add more points when 'repping' - eg someone who has only posted a few times might have only one point to give whereas mega posters like Steve are worth sucking up to .

Lastly (will it ever end?) if you rep someone's post then you cannot rep them again until you have repped a whole bunch of other people first. (I hope you appreciate the grammatical beauty of that last sentence! )

Anyway, hope that helps ...Or would you like directions to another post?

Absolutely beautifully described. I think you deserve lots of rep!

Unfortunatley you will only get a little bit of rep from me because i am a minnow of reputation and posting.

Sorry for being stupid! But still confused - so do you mean the reps I've been giving have all been anonymous? I thought all rep comments automatically showed the 'posted by' name?

Yeah. All reps are now anonymous. Although, from what I've seen recently, most people attach their names.

I'll be doing that in future to any rep I give, be it good, or bad...

Damn - I'm twice as stupid as I thought (re. the rep comment I just did). Of course you're a moderator, Emma, so you can see everything!

    Oops, sorry Rachel, missed this

The posts were originally anonymous..then for a bit they weren't...and now they are again. So you aren't being stupid!! As far as I know they are remaining anonymous, though as Steve said lots of people are now signing their comments.

    Dumbkopf

I've just cottoned on to this reputation thing. I can be staggeringly slow on the uptake - witnesses can be provided.

Surprisingly (and pleasingly) all the reputations I've had about the 'Religious' thread have been positive. (No doubt there are some reading this who will lose no time in trucking on over there and giving some Negative! )

I shall now be on the lookout to give some Reputation comments of my own. What fun!!

    Aaaaarggggh!
Well I followed my "rules", and left it to stew overnight, but when I came back in the morning, I still felt obliged to give a negative rep. So there we go, up pops the window, I fill in a comment, add my name, and click that "add to reputation" button.

Then I realise I'd forgotten to change the selection from positive to negative rep. Now I have to go and spread it around before I can even even up the situation, let along get down to my original negative intention!

Has anyone else given positive rep by mistake? If (/when?) Franck makes changes to the system should the rep box have no pre-selection on it, so that you have to click one option or the other?

    Greg
