Doh... you can only vote for one category...

I can't possibly single out just one...

I have now changed the voting options for multiple votes.

Maybe we should limit it to the top 3, so only choose 3 eras...
    Franck.

    There's an A.P.P. for that!

(Won't be a big suprise to anyone that knows me) 50s EVERY TIME

Coincidentally I am ON THE EDGE OF MY SEAT right now watching for the postie to deliver a VINTAGE DRESS!!!! (please let it fit!!)

One of the first movies I ever saw as a wee girl was the Buddy Holly Story and it absolutely mesmerised me.
Have been playing 50s stuff (right across the style board Rosemary Clooney to Little Richard) since I could reach the record player and even at about age 6 knew never ever ever to touch the face of the records, only the sides

Born Too Late (still say we need a semi quaver smiley!!, Steve sweetie, are you there???)

PS I also suit Halternecks so that helps

    Phil Collins?

As someone who continues (drones) on, maybe. As a "real artist" - well, we're just going to have to disagree!

Stuart (speaking as someone who considers post-Peter Gabriel Genesis as, erm, crap...)

    This thread has terrific argument-potential...

what about........... 'a bit of almost all of the above'.... I grew up with the Beatles ( well not literally ..they didn't get to Aberdeen too often) and then enjoyed the likes of Carly Simon, Carol King, James Taylor, Judy Collins, early Elton John, Rod Stewart but also liked a bit of Sabbath.

Almost come fill circle in thatI still like Judy collins, Carly Simon and now have a little collection of female 'country -ish' and bluesy and 'world music' singers from kd Lang, Suzzy Bogguss, Nancy Griffiths, Mary Chapin Carpenter Eva Cassidy, Kathy Melua, Mariza, Horse, Stacy Kent etc........ Do still like male singers as well and have gone back to the likes of Johnny Cash and also to some older blues and jazz artists ( Duke, Count Bassie, Armstrong, Gillespie, Washington, Fitzgerald et al...)

It's frustrating knowing there is just so much great music out there but so little time to hear even a fraciton of it. Was good to hear the Radio 3 world music awards and some superb music from Afric, Asia, South America.............

What a fab thread this could be...

Thing is though, is it just to do with the music? Elvis etc. is great but part of the appeal at the time (or so I am told... I am willing to defer to one who was there! ) was that it was so different and more sort of risque that what was before it. The same with the punk era...
And if coldplay/snow patrol et al are a return to real music.... where are we returning to? Even the spice girls tracks have the usual verse chorus verse interlude etc...
Maybe they offer a return to proper music in terms of people writting music that they then go on and perform themselves... but where does that leave folk music (which is proper music...some would say true music...but not really original, more like reworkings and reinventions of a core group of songs...)

interesting.... will have a muse about this one.... (pun intended)

If you fancy hearing a wild mix of music from everywhere and just about everywhen, try listening to Late Junction On Radio 3. Some of the stuff is seriously "out there" (Mongolian Throat-singers, etc.) but there's always something of interest.

Age is a question of mind over matter, if you don't mind, it doesn't matter
    Leroy (Satchel) Paige (1906-1982)

Mickey Mouse's girlfriend, Minnie, made her film debut, along with Mickey, in "Steamboat Willie" on November 18, 1928.
That date is recognized as her official birthday.

Well, in terms of living through an era, I guess the 1980s to present (that I can remember, at any rate ). I love the diversity of music, fashion, cultural influences we have now - so I voted for R&B,etc because although it isn't my favourite form of music, it is developing very fast and more than any other form of music right now, sums up for me the cutting edge of the current scene (feel free to disagree). I also voted for the 1920s because it must have been an amazing time to be alive in the happening capitals of the world.

Looking back were any of the fashions really cool or are they all naff with hindsight
Well legwarmers and puffball skirts were just the worst - even the ra-ra skirt looked fashionable in comparison! I think I saw a puffball skirt for sale in Selfridges last weekend - proof that some people never learn

Who are the real artists that continue thru the decades
I have to mention Paul Simon here - my absolute favourite songwriter. I have not liked his more recent work (since the Graceland album) as much as his earlier work but the man writes the most beautiful lyrics And surely it is time to hear 'You can call me Al' at a modern jive night (don't know if it would work, but would love to give it a go) - will have to speak to TwK about that.

Legwarmers? They were great. Like those gloves with the little faces on the finger tips.

My bad memory along that line was the balaclava - my Granny knitted me one (now that was embarassing at school) .

Well, I don't disagree that legwarmers were great from a practical point of view. But I'm not sure they looked great (as a purely fashion item). Perhaps yours were especially nice, Pammy. I had some really nasty maroon ones - found them recently at the bottom of a drawer of clothes at my parents' place. Yikes!!

I had maroon ones too - and over-the-knee-socks!

They'd be called "claret" nowadays though

I know I missed a load out - but only 20 catagories limits it
stuff like flower power, new jazz singers, Modern Jazz etc.

I remember the early 70's the girls had hot pants the guys had tank tops David Bowie [Ziggy period], Roxy music and Led Zep, Suzy Quatro in tight leathers, Trex - great era
One day I may post the picture with me and my afro hair cut

was it the 80's when large women thought it ool to sqeeze into tight trousers

Back to real music ....as in they play real instruments and the music is good,

Urban R&B is great as it is going in a new direction.

Was Elvis as good as Dylan?
Is Robbie better than John Lennon.....[pause to wash mouth out with soap]
    Madonna or Dusty Springfield
Who are the BIG stars to emerge in the 90's & 00's to compare to the likes of the above named artists, Sting, Clapton etc. (Are there any big new named artists/bands?)

Who are the best song writers of the last century (a brace of Gershwins), or Lennon & McCartney, Gothen & King, Holland Dozzier Holland, Bee Gees! Stoc Atkin & Waterman!!,

    Peter
