As it is, I prefer to believe that I dance to the rhythm or to the melody, but that may not be the case; it's all pretty instinctive.

Perhaps if you replace the word beat with pulse you will feel more comfortable with the concepts being discussed
Should we them also start talking about songs as having 'pulses per minute'?

What whitebeard calls 'beat' is really not the 'beat'. It might be called a rhythm (bearing in mind that most tracks have several rhythms). It's probably the baseline rhythm; the melody is likely to have a similar but different rhythm; there might be a harmony with a counterpoint rhythm. And there could be ... well, lots of others.

This is an important distinction. I find a lot of people confuse the baseline with the speed of the track (this is especially true if the baseline includes off beats). This is why it's important to be able to count the beat and the measure not the baseline.

That's a pretty wide and generalised definition and sadly I have to accept the common useage despite the negative (for me) connotations. (A word so loud it seems as to have a presence even when inaudible.)

Pulse is another word of multi-facetted meaning; and, although it is a seldom if ever used in MJ, it is frequently found in Lindy and WCS talk; usually I believe in a more physical sense (eg the Lindy 'bounce'?).
