And the women had a point too. I always teach that there's a nice, dramatic arm movement that you'd do in competitions or cabarets - shoulder, eblow-wrist-and-hand, etc. But I also teach that the arm movement in freestyle, social dancing is just a shadow of that movement done somewhere near the tummy.
My point was that just trying to get them to do a simple 'decoration' was met with a negative response.
In fact one did say 'never mind that, get on with it and show me the move'.
Although to be fair I do think a lot of women look on those 'decorations' as a bit 'showy'.
Apparently not David.
They treat it in the same way as they would the practice of sweeping the hand around the head with the cascading hair across the face.
I can see your point Phil but if you read the thread it doesnt seem so far off topic.
Minnie asked if her nephews could learn to dance at Ceroc.
David and Andy said it wasnt a good idea and suggested ballroom and latin lessons as they were inclined to think that Ceroc teachers were less than competant at teaching frame blah blah blah.
I responded that they were talking complete ******** and tried to give my slant on the way todays teenager and the vast majority of dancers approach MJ, from my experience(ok you might say 'what do i know' but it is my honest opinion).I gave an example of the attitude that I had experienced, albeit not quite on the lines of frame etc but I think it illustrated my point.
OK a bit off topic but I just look at it as a progression of the subject.
Something I forgot to put in an earlier post.
Talking off ballroom lessons. If a son of mine decided to do ballroom jive I would chop his legs off
I loathe it.Done by professionals is even worse.
To be honest, I wish, as a teenager I had learnt any partner dance
unfortunately, at the time, partner dancing was going out of fashion
I guess I was lucky in that partner dancing was the norm on a Saturday night and the dance halls were packed.
Around 10 years ago, I think David and Lily were actually the best exhibition dance couple in the UK including professionals. Certainly they were the only UK couple invited to compete in the Blackpool Professional Exhibition category the year they competed.
On the other hand, seeing as they competed in ballroom dance at university, I'm sceptical about the claim that their "background" is MJ.Saying that some of the UK's best dancers came from MJ is, well, just wrong.
Similarly, I've heard that Ryan Francois "hates" MJ, so I'm not sure it can take much credit for his development.
The first time I saw David and Lily compete in an MJ competition was 1998 at the LeJive Champs. Their cabaret was fantastic! But it wasn't MJ, they couldn't really do MJ - I think they put in a few steps between spectacular lifts.
My guess is that they were taught Ballroom and Latin as children or teenagers - but I could be wrong.
Well an 8 year old joined our class tonight
needles to say she did not rotate and fixed with her Mum during the lesson
but she dance with the Taxis during the freestyle
