A while back, I suffered from severe Plantar Fasciitis, which I found out later was caused by wearing the 'wrong' trainers.
Like you, I have a high arch and therefore, I need to have some sort of a heel.
I had to have prescription orthotics made to go into all my trainers, which look like they'd be horrendously uncomfortable but they work! I also had to have Cortisone injections to cure it but thats another story
Blocks would be a nightmare for me.. plus I agree with Rocky, they make people look like they've got their shoes on the wrong feet! AND most people who dance with them, do that horrible limping bounce

I'd love to know how many dancers have had to have prescription orthotics - there seem to be quite a few of us!
yup ........ me too
Like Lory I got the dreaded Plantar Fasciitis - it was sooooooooooo painful, but I was one of the lucky ones as the severe pain only lasted 6 months.
I believe Hev Mate's pain lasted a couple of years, she gave me some really good tips to help me through it.

Leroy (Satchel) Paige (1906-1982)
Mickey Mouse's girlfriend, Minnie, made her film debut, along with Mickey, in "Steamboat Willie" on November 18, 1928.
That date is recognized as her official birthday.
Does anyone's ever come back? Mine is in remission at the moment, but I still have problems with tight calf muscles, and it reappears every so often, though not as severely these days as I know what to about it (you passed some of those useful tips onto me at Camber I remember )
In that case, can anyone direct me to a podiatrist (or physiotherapist, I guess) who has specialist knowledge about dance injuries and their prevention, and isn't going to be biased towards particular brands? It really is difficult to predict overuse injuries before they occur and as much as I appreciate the advice here, I feel there is little I can do about it without either 1. stopping dancing or 2. seeing a professional.
See your GP in the first instance if you've already got something, and the NHS may take care of it for you (whilst we've still got one). If not, then you'll probably have to ask in your local area, or be specific on here about which town you live in.

I do! Not 100% of the time, but most of it. I try to do calf stretches every day, dancing or not. I use a tennis ball rather than a golf ball though.
I did have but that was before dancing!
In the Army I saw a sports physio who prescribed them to help my lower back problems and they did.
Trouble is that they were great in Army boots, but they could ruin a new pair of trainers in less than 2 weeks, so I haven't used them again since leaving.
My advice is to ask your GP's advice about your problem rather than tell them you need to see a physio. They should give you advice and should refer you to a physio if that is necessary. But they might give you other advice or refer you to a different specialist.
My general advice with GPs is to keep going back until your problem goes away. Most GPs take the view that the problem is solved it the patient stops presenting. Your job as a patient is to keep presenting until you get an effective treatment or the problem resolves itself.
Your GP should be more interested in prevention than treatments. If they are not interested in helping prevent injury they are not a good GP - find a new one, it's really easy, just go to your newly chosen GP and ask to register, they'll do the rest.
How do you chooose a new GP? Ask around.
ok ive a question
i have had two pairs of bloch stealths which sadly are not available any more
both are getting to the stage of being worn out so i need to replace them
i have tried various other shoes and nothing matches them so far
any ideas???
Go on to ebay. I did this about a year ago and brought a stock in my size as I also have no idea how I'm going to manage without my Stealths. The problem is that most of the sizes are now sold
There's still some Stealths available and they're just £19 including postage. Here's an example. However, for this particular lising there's only children's sizes and size 10 available http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/JAZZ-DANCE-TRA...item95032c8df5
It looks like there's also some size 6.5, 7 and 7.5 Stealths on other ebay listings.
Like Martin, I'd love to hear from someone who has successfully replaced their Stealths
I was having quite of lot of pain in my feet a while back - and was having to bind them up (I think it was to stop the arches collapsing but I can't exactly remember) every time I went dancing.
My physio said I might need orthotics and then Rachel Martino - one of Cat Wiles's West Coast Swing UK crew - told me to stop dancing on my toes. The problem went away all on its own
