Re: Scorch May 11 'The Aftermath'

    Good
    • Friday late afternoon / early eve in the bar seeing more and more of my favourite dancers arrive.. Just knew it was set to be a fantastic weekend… and it so was J.
    • So lovely to dance again with some amazing dancers that live far away, so I rarely get to dance with them - that’s probably the best thing of all
    • Discovering new brilliantly fun people to dance with
    • Finally, after 3 years, sussing the sleep deprivation/pain issues and feeling great all weekend long
    • Dancing outside on Sunday afternoon in the sunshine – just magic. And it was nice the pod had collapsed as that gave a second al fresco dancefloor!!
    • Maya’s barbeque on Saturday night – not dampened at all by the weather, What a great lady she is.
    • Having painted windows & new bath in the chalet – so didn’t have to be squeamish about mould.
    • The smoothest drive there and back ever ( only 3.5 hours from Cheltenham on the Friday – took 5.5 last year!)

    Bad
    · It rained and was chilly. Luckily I had 3 duvets and 2 hot water bottles.. Hate to think how I’d have coped otherwise!
    · A few people who I always love to see at weekenders weren’t there this time L

    My thoughts re:
    - Overcrowding. Yes the bar was packed at peak hours which compromised the dancing. However, I ventured into the cyclone room and found lots of blues dancers enjoying a fab set by Rocky fb John Baker and the music wasn't so west coasty either. So I stayed there and had a great time, after which, the bar was civilised again..

    - The igloo. Presumably it was provided following feedback we’d like more space to dance in the day when workshops are on. I guess they’ll listen to feedback re chairs etc too and it’ll evolve. Guess there’s not much they can do about force 9 winds! At Southport, there is continuous daytime dancing anyway cos of the big bar. At Brean and Camber, it’ll probably be used a lot, especially when there are workshops in both main rooms. Once it’s full of great dancers and tunes, it’ll soon become much appreciated.

And mine, even when I tripped over your growth

I had a fab weekend, great company, great music, great dances, lots of giggles and catching up and great weather (on Sunday).

On the other hand the igloo/pod in the lobby has long been mostly unused (outside of masterclasses).

You never had to go outside, and it is on the way between two other rooms, so being inside clearly isn't enough.

Which is why the private party is such a great idea.

Why not make use of a practically unused space.

Anyone who has had to endure a private party in the chalet next to you (complete with standard thump jive music), should realise that moving private parties to the lobby igloo / pod is a great idea.

It was lovely to see you again, even if you were a bit naughty and did too much on Sunday, loved the dances and the hugs!

Don't get me started on that subject. The main reason I did not even attempt to do an SDJ slot is due to previous bad experiences over the so called booking system. Frankly bits of paper or plastic stuck on the wall with sellotape that can be torn down or lost and which allow people to cross out or rub out names are a complete waste of space and open to so much abuse (accidental or deliberate) that it is just not worth the hassle. Give us a proper controlled booking system please. Surely it cannot be that difficult to organise. I gather there is even a thing called the internet now and that Ceroc even have a "web-site" (whatever that is!)

Maybe it would be fairest to allow people access to a 'Sack the DJ booking page', once they've booked and paid.

I should imagine it'd be quite easy to set up.

Blimey, no wonder you never get an invite!

Re: Scorch May 11 'The Aftermath'

I don’t think the children on the floor caused a problem (they were in the corner of the floor in front of the DJ desk, for approx 3 or 4 tracks over an hour & a half), the floor wasn’t that full compared to many other swing weekends. (I have attended 5 swing dance weekends this year, UK and Europe). I think the more important issue was the number of people that had very little spacial awareness whilst dancing, especially those that led their partner on to the floor walking backwards and not looking……. (would you do that when crossing the road!!?).

Re: Scorch May 11 'The Aftermath'

In the time slots when the other dance floors would be busiest and extra dance floor needed, the Pod was listed for private parties, so effectively out of action as a dance space to anyone who wasn't invited. I didn't go anywhere near it for that reason - and on Sat night after I came out of the milonga and saw the main room and blues room both very packed, I didn't want to have to stay up til they thinned out so I didn't dance anymore on Sat night. I know the weather had put the Pod out of action by that stage, but I still would have felt I couldn't go in and dance because it wasn't available as a general dance space.

Private chalet parties tend to be before/after dancing, so not those time slots. And mostly at those people want to chat and have drinks and food.

Re: Scorch May 11 'The Aftermath'

    My review

    The good

    • The new mattresses - slept really well and I think this was part of the reason
    • Seeing some folk I've not seen in ages, including Trouble and DT
    • Dancing for over 2 hours outside on Sunday evening, under beautiful blue skies and as the sun set... bliss
    • The mad NI crowd and Irish crowd - lots of fun and giggles!
    • Some lovely dances in the tango room and blues room
    • Marc's last set
    • Dancing with my lovely man, who managed to find somewhere to buy me roses.

    The not so good

    • The weather - can't be helped
    • A few 'downgrades' for the club chalets - no welcome pack, no hand soap in the bathroom etc
    • Seeming to lose track of time on Sat afternoon and missing seeing Ruby Red
    • The dance rooms being seriously over-crowded on Sat night, wasn't enjoying 'defensive' dancing so gave up and went to bed about 1am. (This did however mean I was less tired and more able to dance a lot on the Sunday.)
    • Missing dancing with lots of people who were there but who I didn't find, or didn't look for til too late on Sunday night/Mon morning and didn't have enough time left.
    • No-where to get food at night - I can only dance all night if I get food and I don't really want to start having to cook at 2am, ended up buying frozen pizzas and making those.

Really enjoyed the weekend, as did all the NI crowd who were there. Already booked for October.

Not that I'm trying to compete or anything but I too attend lots of swing events and weekenders and I've never seen any kids 'play dancing' at any of them, because as you rightly state, they are manic and two young children would last about 5 seconds before someone accidentally drop kicked them across the room. Hey look, I'm not the child catcher here, I was genuinely concerned one of them was going to get hurt...I winced a couple of times at the closeness of child head to foot contact, while watching others dance.

You have a point there, most of the parties i've been to have been pre-dance or after-dance, where people drink, eat and socialise but seldom dance.

Re: Scorch May 11 'The Aftermath'

Disclaimer: We were teaching and DJ-ing.

    I had a brilliant time!

    The Good:
My first 2 dances of the weekend, Brian Stephen and Stephen North, what a treat!
The banter on Friday in the Blues Room and later in the WCS/Latin Room, while Harmonica Man was playing.
Harmonica Man and Rocky's Blues Set in the WCS/Latin Room - amazing atmosphere.
Catch up hugs and nonsense with Toni and Lory, it's been way too long!
Franck's jokes at the Saturday Class: the cold remedy drugs he was taking all seemed to be kicking in at once
The WCS room being so busy on Saturday night, great buzz.
Being asked to lead 2 very good female dancers on Saturday night in The Blues Room.
Dale and Nicola's Line Dancing Class - which I got up early on Sunday morning to do.
Sunday's Swingers Hour Swirly Dress Time - I was very red and almost dead after, but loved it.
The Waffle Party and the "Musical Pass The Waffle" game
    Dirty Blues on Sunday night
The last hour in the main room. Chris Baker played a great set and I just couldn't sit any out. Caught up with loads of fantastic dances, it was brilliant!
Finally getting to do the Shuffle

    The Bad:
Franck being ill all weekend, and not being able to dance much at all.
Falling asleep on Saturday night and missing the Shufflin' in the main room
Missing out on dances with loads of people, which I aim to rectify, at VLV in a week's time.
The weather spoiling things a little bit.
Sitting down, after I went back to the chalet for a quick shower, and not being able to get up again, so missing Marc's set on Sunday night.

    The Ugly:
Trying to pack the car in the rain and wind on Monday.

    That reminds me, I wanted to make a suggestion;

Apart from a few lindy hoppers during the swing session, everyone else was MJ'ing to the swing and rock & roll music. It reminded me of Cheshunt when Robin puts Candyman on...I swear he only does it to kill off a few of the olden's.

Anyway, seeing as it's so popular, I'd like to suggest that a basic rock & roll and/or Lindy lesson is fitted into the schedule, ideally just before swing session so that folk can dance in a more comfortable fashion to the fast tempo's and practice the moves they’ve just learnt. It's so much easier than trying desperately to keep up doing modern jive.

I had the same argument in reverse with Jive Addiction in February, in that they did do basic Lindy lessons but didn’t then play any swing music at all over the weekend to practice the moves you’d learnt.

T'was great to see you too and the lovely Johnathan. I had a little dance with him...he apologised, in advance, for his dancing. Tell him to pack that in, he's lovely to dance with.
