Re: Fair rate for Private Lessons

I think the problem for dance teachers is that private lessons do not pay as well as teaching a group lesson. Some teachers could think 'I get paid 75 for teaching a 30 minute intermediate lesson, therefore my rate is 150 an hour".

My business view is that you should maximise your income for each hour. If you were going to earn more than 30 for the hour you spent giving a private lesson you should do what would have paid you the most - I'd need to be prohibitively expensive if I was teaching during the time I would normally be working on a Pharma Company project.

I usually give my private lessons in an hour before a regular class, normally on a Sunday - no extra travelling expenses, no extra set up time, I wouldn't be working in that time so it's extra income, etc.

Yep, you could say the same about all teaching, with regards to small vs. large classes.

Get 50 people there at 5 per pop, and you're making far more money than you would teaching 10 people. Even though no-one can "teach" 50 people, you can only show them a routine and give them some technique tips.

Cor, that's a damnsight more than Ceroc pay.

    Allegedly.

Personally, I like giving private lessons, because I can work on a person or couple and see them improve significantly in a short time. But yes, commercially, privates don't pay as well per hour as group lessons. Although privates don't need much organisation to set up either.

How much do you 'allege' that 'Ceroc pay'?

My own opinion is that a MJ teacher is employed to work the whole night. That includes dancing with the customers. Some time ago I asked a MJ teacher his rate for teaching an intermediate lesson: his reply was '120 and I won't dance with the putners afterwards'. I didn't book him.

I don't blame him. I won't dance with putners either, they're awful people and terrible dancers.

My understanding is that 75 would be about right - or possibly even too much - for a Ceroc teacher for an entire night. But my understanding may be 100% wrong.

Heh, well your punters probably smell

On a semi-serious note, there's a difference between a one-off contract fee ("guest star appearance" thing) and a regular weekly income.

Tell you what, I'll do it for 60 and I'll even dance with your punters after, even if they are smelly. Can't say fairer than that guv.

Do Ceroc head office set the fees that teachers are paid or is it down to the owner of the franchise with guidance from Ceroc HQ

What a right load of snake oil. I'd want my money back.

    A beginner wanting a bit of help 20- 30

An intermediate wanting some help getting rid of some bad habits 30-50

but an experience couple wantin to enter competitions 50-85
    plus expenses

Doesn't seem unreasonable to me. The higher the level of skill required and offered the more you pay. You'd want the goods delivered for 85 though. Would that include a guarantee?

I'd imagine that for that level, you'd want competition winners with a track record of good coaching also. So you're paying for two sets of skills.

... The plumber comes round my house, he says I charge 25 pond an hour (which I thought was a little pricey for a one man band in the middle of a reccession) and 50 if it's a 1 hour call out (because you've got traveling and disruption to take into account).

I can't see why a dance teacher would be any cheaper.

    Really?
I can't imagine a situation where I need to call out a dance teacher in an emergency (especially not to fix my plumbing ).

I've danced with quite a few women who I'd like to call me late at night for emergency help with their posture

Given the responsibility if anything went wrong, the training and the expertise needed by a Plumber ..... how could you justify a MJ teacher charging anything like? Surely there is no comparison?

Top US WCS teachers are charging around 80 to 100 per hour when they are over here

    Maybe not all teachers.

But a good self employed dance teacher, with years of training and experience should be able to earn the same as a good tradesman with like wise years of training and experience imo.

I think people see what they are paid per hour and think how can it cost that much? But your company takes care of your NI, Accounts, pension, holidays, sickness and expenses for you.

I have, on a few occasions, traded an hour of my time, for an hour of a teachers time. It has alway been excellent value for me and I hope for both of us

    Supply. Demand. Shrug.

Personally, I very very rarely go to "guest teachers" - either for privates or group classes. From bitter experience, guest teachers provide far less value than a regular, non-flashy-but-competent local teacher.

Pretty much the only time I pay visiting teachers is on a personal recommendation from someone whose opinion I value. That's worked out pretty well over the past couple of years.
