I think the problem for dance teachers is that private lessons do not pay as well as teaching a group lesson. Some teachers could think 'I get paid £75 for teaching a 30 minute intermediate lesson, therefore my rate is £150 an hour".

My business view is that you should maximise your income for each hour. If you were going to earn more than £30 for the hour you spent giving a private lesson you should do what would have paid you the most - I'd need to be prohibitively expensive if I was teaching during the time I would normally be working on a Pharma Company project.

I usually give my private lessons in an hour before a regular class, normally on a Sunday - no extra travelling expenses, no extra set up time, I wouldn't be working in that time so it's extra income, etc.
