I want to stain my bed

I have this lovely solid pine bed but, hate the colour. I would love it to be dark. I understand that I need to sand or wire wool it first but, what next? I have looked on numerous wood websites but, still have no idea. Do I use a wax, oil, stain or varnish? Any help would be much appreciated

You may want to get a mod to change that to "I want to stain my wooden bed" or you may be getting offers you hadn't expected!

I guess that what you used depends on the finish you want - if you want something glossy, use a varnish, matt use a stain. I've only stained previously unpainted/varnished shelves. Have you got a friendly local DIY shop nearby? I usually ask in my local one when I'm not sure - not B&Q though.

it very much depends on the wood and the finish

some finishes are very difficult to stain, unless removed completely

can you post a close up photo

tip practice on area that does not show

The bed is pine and the typical honey colour! I would upload a photo but have no idea how to do so.

going to an area that does not show
can the finish be scraped off ?
    if so what is underneath?

    is it modern or old?

I used to stain cheap wooden furniture/ skirting boards using Potassium permanganate. It comes out a lovely colour. I'm not sure if I'd use it on something really expensive though. Beware it stains your skin instantly too! Rubber gloves essential!

Re: I want to stain my bed

Must a bit of a Tracy Emin influence going on.

I had a bed made for me. I stained it black using some sort of woodstain. It then needed a coat of matt varnish to seal the surface. There was no problem with prep because it was raw timber. I had to use the woodstain/varnish combo because there was no other way to do black, but that may have changed.

If you just want a dark wood colour you could probably do it more easily and cheaply with a wood-coloured varnish which you can get anywhere. Then you only need one coat (or as many as you need to build up the desired depth of colour). You'll have to do a lot of sanding first, though. You might get away with just roughing up the surface of the old varnish rather than removing the whole lot, but try it on the underneath first to see what works.
