On Thursday it is New Year for most of the peoples of Sri Lanka including my Buddhist half (not my wife, I am half Sri Lankan and half English). The holidays actually begin tomorrow and continue till Monday, when it is my birthday on Wednesday (but that's another matter).
My point though, is, Sri Lanka has the most public holidays in the world. 28 days in fact. E.g. one day a month for the full moon, Buddha's birthday, Christmas, Ramadan, Devali, "World f@#$ing Temperance Day." While it is great on the one hand, the country loses huge international revenue. And in fact the govt. is considering doing away with half of them.
What part do bank/public/religious holidays play in a nation. Do we need 'em?
Pretty much like the UK. All tourist hotels for example are open, Muslim owned restaurants and grocery shops are open (but then they are open for part of the day on their own new year too). But public/state offices are closed, financial/corporate businesses too. There are a few buses and trains.
