Ahh Ok, I understand now, as I can see several elements which have altered, (e.g. sharpening, details in the darks are now visible etc, as well as the colour change) A 'preset' in essence, is a series of filters put together to make an 'action' (you can make your own actions in PS, of which I often do, when I want to edit a 'batch' the same way)
In L3 I suspect its instant?

In PS, you can also obtain 'actions' made by others and I have a few myself but the annoying thing is, you don't have a 'preview' they're just called a name (with my own, I 'try' to call them something that actually makes sense, like 'Heavily contrasted B/W=Black and white but some of the same people come up with are just random, like Kahwe )

But the positive thing is, all the actions make individual 'layers', of which you can tweak after, if you add a layer mask!

Some of the actions make tons of layers but that's also a good way of learning, as you can turn each layer off individually to see what difference each one makes.

In LR you can inculude as much or as little as you want in a preset
e.g. I have" auto lens correction" and "AUTO WB" as a perset when importing but I can remove or modify them , at any time, with one click
LR come with a whole load of presets
including some which can match the camera settings
They are often a good starting point

I don't think you can beat it if you're editing batches and you always need to do the same corrections on import.

For simple editing, it seems a lot more intuitive than PS, but you can't do some of the complicated composites. I just wish they'd merge the best of both and make one 'super programme'

I much prefer the 2nd shot.

However, there's a couple of things that are lost. The effect of the setting sun on underside of the clouds has disappeared. And, from a print viewpoint, there is a good chance that you've ended up with a white space/hole. You always need some kind of half-tone or shade in your picture or it looks like you've got holes when you go to print.

By the the second shot do you mean the one on the right?
The RH photo has no "correction" at all
This what it would look like "corrected" but no graduated filter

Re: Learning Photoshop ( or any photo editing software )

Interestingly this is the first time I've seen this thread! (I don't come here much anymore). I've got CS5 and just purchased Lightroom. So haven't a clue how to use it yet. But I was recommended it by a couple of photographer friends mainly because of the speedy editing of multiple pics at once. So I feel I may be asking a few questions in the future. lol

I find LR3 fast and friendly LR 4 looks even better
Matt Kloskowski has some very good online training videos of Kelby Training. they are not free. but very good value for money

For things you cannot do in Lightroom (eg intelligent fill ). it is very easy to open the file in CS5. Just make sure you have plenty of RAM

The one thing I find that LR doesn't do well - or rather than I struggle to do well in LR, is cloning stuff out. Small spots etc, yes, but anything else, especially an irregular shape, it just isn't easy to do. So at some stage I will get Photoshop.

But for now, LR is enough. I like that you can go back at any time, weeks or months later and undo stuff and start again at any point in the process. And also the batch edit of stuff. Even if I had CS5 I think I'd only use it for 10% of what I want to do. And there are a lot of other programs I'd like to get... then again there are lots of photographic related stuff I'd like to get... its a very expensive hobby isn't it?!

Lynn for cloning you can use elements
in LR go to the top Photo tap
    in the drop down box
    click "open in Elements"
having finished cloning you can save your edit back into LR

    What's a top Photo tap?

For what it's worth, I've just checked every menu and drop-down I can find in LR3.6 and none of them mention opening in Elements. (This may be because I don't have Elements )

Photo>Edit>edit in PS... on my Lightroom. I'm guessing it IS because you don't have Elements yes.

Ah, not used Elements much since I got it (got Elements 8 in Currys for £10 a few months back). I did actually edit a file in Elements today but I just edited the smallish jpeg I'd exported out of LR. It was some stray hairs round her neck on either side and I just wouldn't be able to do it in LR - quick edit in Elements... (not perfect)

I know - this was the only set up where I actually felt the dramatic make up worked. It was too OTT for some of the other outfits/poses. And those eyelashes caused shadows...

Lovely as the models were, I was also glad the MUA brought her fiancee along as it was nice to have a man to shoot too!
