The change is all to do with how NEW dancers experience learning to dance and about improving retention.

It's not about technicalities, it's not about the subtleties of lead and follow, it's all about improving the customer experience and about helping people to connect with dancing more quickly in that short window of opportunity we have with them at the start.

It's been trialled in numerous venues before Xmas and the feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive.. Ceroc will be reviewing the feedback over the coming months and all they are concerned about is being pro-active about improving the customer experience.
Seems to me that most are welcoming the proposals - good luck to Ceroc

    Sorry Rocky
Given that several formalities were prepared to give their Christmas Holiday to argue about it, and give we have another bank holiday coming up. I very much doubt it

The problem comes when people who call themselves advanced dancers fail to get the advanced move. This means the move was not advanced - my guess is that the advanced dancers will assume it was the teacher who was rubbish.

After all, the advanced dancers know everything about dance and could probably teach the teacher a thing or two.

    1 - depends how it's taught
2 - if u've not cleared the line, you'll step into your partner, and hence the whole slot/line of dance principle is lost.... and then u have a circle.

Just give a thought to us demo's who have to learn the moves on the spot and then learn the intermediate routine in about 5 mins. Remeber teachers you cant do it without us !!!!!!!

Good god ... just come acroos this thread .... nice to see the fundamentals of the Forum (willing to argue relentlesslesy in the face of minimal available fact) still continues.

I suupose the acid test of the changes (anyone actualy clear as to what they are?) will be if the Independents feel themsleves compelled to follow/copy or else Ceroc will have a major competitive advantage?

I know what the moves are - I've spent the last week learning them. I can't tell you lot though.... I'll be teaching my first set on Tue night and I'm nervous about teaching for the first time in over 10 years (which I think is a good thing). The moves are very different and I believe they are much better than the originals. I expect the indepents will adopt the new moves as the older ones will seem dated. An example: side to side shoulders. Yuk! I've taught it for over a decade and it was out of date 10 years ago. I know that there will be resistance because people generally hate change. I remember doing my first 'ceroc essentials' and only 2 people out of about 40 got up to join in. It was at the Marcus Garvey ballroom and I battled through it with 38 pairs of eyes glaring at me and willing me to hurry up. I've never felt so conspicuous in my life! Yep, I'm really looking forward to Tuesday...

Or it is possible that the changes may have been introduced as a result of observing the independents? A hugely successful business like Ceroc I'm sure can only continue to be successful by keeping abreast of what's out there and what the competition is doing, and monitoring any new ideas and new influences.

Me too - there are 11 beginner moves, and there's First Move low hand and high hand, and I think there's a step back on the gith foot in the first move (when opening out).

To be honest, I lost the will to live after a few minutes of explanation.

But the information I have is that there's no new "technique" - certainly nothing about how to dance in a slot. So it's simply some new moves, that's it.

    Why?

I still do it. There's no such thing as a bad move, there's simply bad dancers. Any move looks good with good technique. Well, except the Tunnel.

Yes, that's true. On the other hand, new moves is not a significant change - it's less significant even than going from 4 to 3 moves in the beginners class.

I thought they'd been introduced by leveraging the synergistic relationships?

Hey, you're the ones who get the round of applause at the end of the lesson

When was the last time you heard a teacher clapped?

.. I know some teachers deserve the clap, but's that's a different story

Your point made sense - there was nothing to respond to in it... shrug.

Of course - if your teacher could actually lead, maybe you wouldn't have to

I'll just be getting my coat then...

If the teacher is teaching from the point of view of a leader then yes. Not so easy if the teacher (for example if she's female) is teaching as a follower...
    Love dance, will travel
