Royal Wedding Holiday - Please Vote

    Hello peeps.
I would love to find out how employers are going to treat the royal wedding holiday thingy next year.
Would y'all be so kind as to do a wee vote on my poll?
I hope I've covered all the possibilites but very interested to hear if there's another way of handling it that I haven't considered.
    many thanks to all
    C

Not a poll I can contribute to as I am not in the UK. But I would like to think there would be a holiday (I am not a royalist).

If it were here in Sri Lanka there would probably a week given, we will most likely get a day anyway. Mind you we have the most public holidays in the world. 28 days off per year.

We're closed on the 29th and then they set a minimum cover level for the three days between Easter and then. We had to let them know if we wanted those days off and if need be they were going to ballot to make it fair instead of first come first served.

I've got the time off Three days holiday in exchange for 11 days holiday = happy me

It will be an extra Bank Holiday in the UK.

However that doesn't necessarily mean everyone gets the day off, hence Chicklet's poll, I think.

Does that apply UK-wide? I thought it was only definite for England and Wales - although I think that Salmond's hinted it'll be the same for Scotland.

Presumably the same rules will apply as they would for other public holidays?

Nothing's been said to us at all but I'm sure it'll just be another bank holiday for us.

Well it says on the Direct Gov website:
The Scottish government has announced that there will be an additional bank holiday on 29 April 2011 when the royal wedding is due to take place.

Also on the Direct Gov website it says:
Businesses and schools are not necessarily closed on Scottish bank holidays
So it seems the "rules" can be a tad flexible in Scotland- which I imagine is why Chicklet was asking (unless she's moved South of the border).

My boss is so upset because our contracts at work state "20 days holiday plus bank holidays", so he's having to let us have the day off. I think he could have forced us to work if it read "28 days holiday per year", but it doesn't, so he can't.

I think Bank holidays are statutory though, aren't they?

it all depends on your contact of employment

If your contract of employment says "28 days holiday per year" that all you are entitled to, if it also says something like "bank holiday must be taken as part of you holiday allowance " then you have no right to an extra day off

    The basics of holiday rights

One of my customers (top 4 retailer) doesn't get bank holidays off, but they have more holiday allowance overall.

    That's the most irritating thing.
I am a royalist and I'm actually looking forward to the wedding and all the fuss, but I'm also self-employed, which means that the government is forcing me to lose more money during a depression! How about all the other small businesses that are struggling to survive and will now have to pay their employees for an extra day off! Grrrr

Re: Royal Wedding Holiday - Please Vote

Thanks all. One of my hats in the office says HR on it so I'm up to speed with what we have to offer by law and am involved in writing the employment contracts so this was more to see if there was a clear mood out there among other places that don't HAVE to offer the extra day.

It seems to me that, as such an anouncement comes out once in a blue moon - was the last one in '81 for C&D?? - the intention is to encourage employers to allow employees Something Extra, I just wondered how many were actually going to go ahead and do that. Hopefully a few more peeps will be so kind as to vote to up the sample?

Thanks again to all who have and will
