Binoculars?

Can anyone offer any advice on what I should look for when buying some, I don't have a clue

I've just looked at Amazon and the selection is emence and bewildering.

The prices range from £4-99 to over 5k

They all have different numbers but the number don't seem to bear any relation to the price

I just want a decent pair for under £100, that arn't huge or too heavy.

I can understand that the greater the number, the more magnification but I don't understand how the two numbers work together?

For sailing I use a pair of 7x50
but these would not fit in your pocket
For something smaller look at a pair of 8x25

beware any thing more powerful than x 10 is difficult to hand hold

I bought Minolta Compact 8 x 21 a few years ago and have been very pleased. Quite light and easily fits in the pocket. However, if you are going to the tropics I would recommend anti-condensation as it is annoying when they fog up for several days just when you need them. I also would consider red lens which I have been told is good for night vision (bird watching or such).

Nothing very specific.

..... views, wildlife, seascapes, mountains and general noseyness

A Viz Top Tip..........

....... Don't waste money buying expensive binoculars. Simply stand closer to the object you wish to view.

Well, in the end, I tried out the whole range at Dixons and ended up settling for a pair of Bushnell 8x25 @ £35
There's were other's that were clearly better for various reasons but 'for me' they didn't warrant the extra cost

Anyway, I'm really pleased with them and one of the pleasures I had with them yesterday was, standing on the top of a mountain and spotting a castle in the distance, that I'd never of been able to see otherwise, then sussing it out on the map and finding our way there.. then standing on the top of the castle and looking back at where I'd just been
