Instead of rows as would normally be we were told to circle the dance floor, it just didn't work. I decided to stand in the empty space in the middle of the dance floor with a couple of other girls and just practice the footwork without a partner for the entire class. Wasn't impressed. They did seem to iron it out and get it right for the other class on the Sunday though.
Was the teacher a guest? Sometimes if you're not used to the "ceroc model", people get arranged in a circle - actually, that's how most other dance forms are taught.

To be fair, it's quite possible that they had people pay in advance, then a few of the guys didn't show up. It happens.

I'd suggest people should write to Pontins on this issue, to both:
    - Compliment Larry
    - Complain about everyone else.

Can someone remind me, what on Earth are you lot arguing about?

Because it sounds pretty damn obscure to me.

    And boring.

Would you like to expand on the above and why you disagree with FF.

Personally I add WCS moves into my MJ all the time but the timing is very different.

All the ladies that I dance with that can dance WCS and MJ will change their footwork according to what they are dancing.

When I saw Carl and Susie dance in last years and this years competition I would not have thought they or Susie were dancing WCS.

I dance MJ and stick triples and all sorts of variants in all the time, I can't help it but to the outside, it may appear that I'm doing WCS footwork?

From what I understand, the judging for the Blues comp was based on, the lead and follow, intimacy, musical and lyrical interpretation and how 'together' the couple were feeling the music.
I don't think foot patterns came into it?

Anyway, "Its only a bloody competition" and to think people keep trying to tell me its FUN!

    Only a competition?

How can you say such a thing? I thought the winners would be Acknowledged As Lords Of The Universe Forever?

I had a really good time, esp the Milonga Sat night which was full, thanks to Mark and Rachel for supplying me with so many ladies to dance with.

I don't disagree with his conclusion (or yours).

But from someone with his technical background I'd expect a more reasonable basis for his conclusion.

It would be a sorry state of affairs, and difficult to learn much if no one dared question it.

In WCS isn't it all about the follower ?

It isn't what the leader does but what the follower does (essentially doing unled stuff like trying to move to the end of the slot) which makes the dance characteristic of WCS, rather than slotted jive.

Don't most people look at the follower when identifying a dance as WCS (the leader being relatively static).

How did I miss you? Did you come out of your chalet other than for the milonga?

I think what defines WCS separately from other dances is the elasticity / stretch produced by the leader and follower. If you get to watch Paul Warden when he socially dances, you will see that he likes to move around alot, he will scroll around his partner, he wil stop his partner and move to the opposite side and make the slot much longer.

Wcs has clearly defined rules. Please remind me what rules clearly define "Slow Ceroc"(Blues)...... Seems to me if its nearly another dance it can still be MJ

    There are no rules.

And looking at Lory's lovely vid, it seems to be all pretty much "slow MJ" - there is very little dancing which doesn't seem to be of the form "MJ moves done slowly"... with SexyDipsTM, SexyWigglesTM and EvenSexierCostumesTM thrown in.

There's mostly accordion-type movements, and there's not much dancing in close hold. There's spins, sometimes lots of spins, and there's a lot of facing away from your partner.

It's a lot of lovely dancing, of course, but it's clearly an MJ competition done to a particular music tempo, rather than a "Blues" competition. Whatever that is.

I can understand how some people would think that Minnie, it is a personal thing what each of us like, and thank goodness for it. Tango can be danced to contemporary music as well as the traditional songs

I know some AT teachers who would vehemently disagree with that. Personally, I cannot stand watching (for example) AT danced to pop music. Strictly is a repeat offender on this issue - - I love the track, and the dancing is great, but my brain cannot make any connection between the dance and the music - and in consequence that performance has absolutely no appeal for me
