From what you have described it seems to be a question of what extent she danced WCS rather than not dancing WCS.

    Therefore
....I am pretty sure the rules state that pure WCS is not allowed
As it was against the rules she couldn't win. I would suggest the word pure is not used in the rules.

I remember watching a couple in a Blues competition. In my opinion and that of everybody else they looked the best couple. However I don't think they danced a purely blues routine, so I reluctantly had to agree with the judges.

If you don't follow the rules you shouldn't win.

She didn't dance WCS - end of!!!

Fully agree that Ekow and Anna were worthy winners, but also that Carl & Susan deserved a place - as for 3rd, well it could really have been any of the others - I thought the standard was extreemely high. A pleasure to watch

I am sorry but she absolutely did not dance WCS last year. I am sure there is some footage on YouTube somewhere - will try and find it.

Are we talking open or DWAS? Open she was dancing with Carl - my apologies for misuse of word "pure", but the rest - I can assure you that it looked pretty much WCS-ey to me - and 20 other people standing and sitting around me...

Hmmm, the other thought - maybe that's how Carl was leading her? He does a lot of one track leading - maybe that's why? Just a thought...

Yes it was the Open with Carl I am referring to.

They placed second - I do not think they would have had they been dancing WCS as it would have contravened the rules.

Re: Breeze 2010 - the aftermath

    Hi all,

This was my first big weekender down South at all (I thought I might as well go for the most difficult to reach by public transport one – just for a laugh ), so here goes:

Check in was amazingly quick and easy, and as a nice surprise I got a chalet all to myself. I had gone for serious budget, so was expecting to share with another lady.
I also decided to blow that same budget, and dine out most of the time, so self catering space wasn’t really an issue.

Can someone explain this puzzling fact ? There were beginner CEROC lessons, WCS lessons and dips and drops workshops (among others) but only 2 or 3 on specific Blues aspects... WHY??

One thing that I would have expected, would have been a beginners class in Blues holds, maybe another in Blues Musicality ideas – fast blues contrasting with slow blues, and Lastly but most sadly – where was the class in Micro Blues?? I SO want to learn more about breath lead etc...
I went to Nigel and Nina’s class on the 20s/30s blues – and that so opened my eyes – Thank you – more please!!

I meant to go to Roy Power's Close and Sassy workshop too, but the Dance with a Stranger comp was too fascinating to leave (particularly with the weather as it was, and my shoes not keeping the protectors on!!).

Watching all the competitions was fascinating and showed me that there was so much more to learn (even without the drops and ariels )

Meeting friends old and new, on the forum and off, is always part of the fun of travelling, and I so enjoyed meeting you all and socialising . (Names as usual escape me but I might manage to facebook a few pics. So tags would be useful when they go up Cheers.)

Did the tempo actually slow down that much in freestyle at all? I had to crash about 3 on both Fri and Sat as I had been around during the day for way too long. (I had to go back at around 1 on Sunday – Damn early trains) but I had carefully stayed up especially to catch Marc and Silverfox’s sets on Friday (for example)... Is there a rule that slow tempo has to be played at 4am or after? I’m thinking of “What’s New” or “OK, Alright, You Win" by Peggy Lee, which aren’t exactly suicide blues??

I will go and rave about my dances on the Message in a bottle thread as usual

Must go and catch up on

    Cheers WT

IIRC the rules didn't make a distinction between Ceroc / Modern Jive and West Coast Swing, but noted both weren't blues.

So they are as free to apply a WCS flavour to their blues as other couples are to apply a Ceroc flavour.

There are certainly decorations popular in WCS, but decorations aren't a fundamental part of that dance.

Everyone calm down! she could only have been dancing WCS is her partner was leading it! Carl didn`t dance WCS from my recollection because if they had i`m sure they would not have placed which they did

    Huh.

One might almost guess that there's no such definable dance form as MJ Blues.

Grrrrrrrrrrr.............they are so unhelpful at reception. Just called asked for Larry, it is his day off apparently and absolutely no one else in the whole place could help with lost property other than him!

Re: Breeze 2010 - the aftermath

Just a very brief overview of my weekend. Had a wonderful time , thoroughly enjoyed the weekend, the atmosphere was fabulous and had some lovely dances. Great to see 'weekender' friends.

Unusually for me though a couple of things that I would like to say that dampened it a little bit........

I wanted to do the WCS class on the Saturday morning. The organisation of the class was awful. I know you never know how the gender balance of these things will turn out, but the rotation and set up of it was a bit of a sham. Instead of rows as would normally be we were told to circle the dance floor, it just didn't work. I decided to stand in the empty space in the middle of the dance floor with a couple of other girls and just practice the footwork without a partner for the entire class. Wasn't impressed. They did seem to iron it out and get it right for the other class on the Sunday though.

Also, the Master Classes were listed as having to attend with a fixed partner. When we got there it seemed that wasn't the case and there were spare women, although for a lot of the class we were doing things individually, we did have to rotate when needing a partner. It wasn't the end of the world but not what I expected, as there were moments when I didn't have a 'partner' to practice with. Having paid for the priviledge of a master class it wasn't what was written on the label. To be fair it was a good class and I did learn from it. Just a little gripe

........and of course the ridiculousness of the staff and lost property........I was directed to four different areas, all in various places around the 'camp' in order to find my shoes and still not told about the stuff being put in the blues room on Monday morning!

Won't stop me going back next year though. Another cracking time, made memorable by special friends and wonderful chalet mates.

    The Ugly

    The Lumpy Mattress.
The rain on Saturday Night / Sunday Morning.
The all day breakfast finishing at 11.30 am on Sunday morning.
Using a New DJ soft ware which in the middle of a sack the DJ slot just killed all the music, there was some clever good natured abuse flying around.

    The good

Boing Boing Music in the fast room, this is what I expect and it helps to bring back some energy after being in the COS / Blues room.

    The really good

Having one of the Ceroc champs rushing up to ask me for a dance, I really think it should be the other way round.

    The Really Really Good

Foxy and John Bakers soulful / funky sets.

    The Fab

Getting a chance to play some soulful tunes to a packed dance floor in the Boudoir room and receiving some really nice comments about the music played.

All in all another great weekend at Brean and a big thanks to all the DJ’s for putting on some great music.

Lastly it was great to be able to stand and watch two great couples (Mike and Linda Ellard, Nigel and Nina) free styling in front of us.

Rather a circular argument there (and even then the proposition that the follower isn't dancing WCS if the leader isn't leading it is highly debatable).
