    Lux - The Aftermath

I did not go on the full package only to the freestyles this year. Had a really fantastic weekend and could already see an improvement on last year.

    Friday

Was already buzzing when I got there (about 11pm), had some great dances and particularly liked Toby’s (DJ Kenobe) set. Lots of unusual music that made me want to dance.

    Saturday
Took a little while to get into my stride but again great music and dances and even went into the fast room as Pete was playing his set in there so went in to support him, all was going well until he played an Abba remix and I made a quick exit out. I’d driven home in the morning and then drove back for evening, so felt pretty exhausted and wimped out at 5:30am, so never made it to end

    Sunday

We got there at about 6 and went into the Utopia room which had a real buzz about it. I had some of my best dances then, including one with a young guy in a flat cap, wow what a dance. It then went a bit quiet a think a lot of the people who were staying in the hotel went to get ready for dinner and the evening, plus the room was then turned over to WCS for 3 hours. So went to the foyer to chat and have coffee (which was a little excessive at £3 a small cup and was a bit stewed), so Ant kindly got us a coffee from the garage. Sunday night’s dancing really did not happen for me until after midnight after that. This was not a problem did lot’s of a chatting and ended up playing a strange type of game a mixture of truth and dare meets spin the bottle with Herbie, Carl, Sunnybunny and some others very funny and very interesting but what was said at the table, stays at the table. Once the Utopia room was back to more normal Utopia (not WCS specific) the evening was then brilliant and had some of my best dances of the weekend, including a couple of lovely dances with Franck on the veranda and a brilliant dance with Tim Sant (and such a nice guy).

    Highlights

Being lifted up and spun round by Herbie (Hope his back is ok!!!), the above mentioned dances and all the other great guys I danced with (don't want to mention any names as I will probably forget someone), great music, catching up and chatting to friends in comfortable surroundings and a lovely atmosphere.

    What could be improved
I think the 3rd room was sometimes not a benefit. Think it is great for the Milonga or something specialist but seemed a waste when both the Utopia and the Blues room seemed to be playing very similar music and sometimes the DJ in the 3rd room were playing some fantastic tracks but there were only a handful of people in there.

The Sunday night WCS sessions running for 3hours was just a bit too long for anyone who is non WCS like me.

Because I was not staying in the hotel having to do the drive back to my hotel about 8 miles away

I think as the evening sessions were so long would have been nice to have some refreshments laid on.

I did notice there were quite a lot of ladies over at times and think this could be because some women bring along non dancing partners to these events as there is enough to do for non dancers. Maybe when looking at gender balancing the organisers could ask on booking form whether dancers and non dancers are attending

    Will I go again
Yes of course, overall loved it and a big thanks to all the lovely guys that I danced with you all helped to make my weekend

    Growl!

I got a last minute ticket for Sunday night (thanks Jivelad) and so glad I did!

We arrived at about 9-30 to what can only be described as a nearly dead venue But then we realised, that the evening dinner was only just over and very soon the whole place was buzzing

I only spent time in the main room and WCS/Blues room, as even though I love tango, I had two whacking great blisters on both heals and needed to wear my oldest flattest shoes, which aren't exactly great for Tango!

But anyway, I was completely happy with the other two room and in actual fact, it made the choice much easier!

I had a fab time and what was particularly nice, was seeing and dancing with people I haven't seen for ages and finding out that I hadn't completely forgotten how to WCS

    I'm knackered today though!

    Re: Lux - The Aftermath

Having been to Lux last year and enjoyed it so much, this year had a lot to live up to.

The hotel room was excellent as before but I seem to remember a bigger bed last year ... however the chocolates had expanded and were even contained in their own chocolate log! The air conditioning is amazingly reviving and any small problems we had were very quickly and efficiently sorted by staff. We heard nothing of the early morning dancing but I did hear several non-dancing guests complain to staff and even one dancing couple told me they asked to be moved because of the noise (which seemed a little strange to me ).

In general the food was pretty good or even very good, in fact the breakfasts were so magnificent that I found it was quite an effort to manage lunch (but I did my best!). On the other hand I don't really like mixing lots of eating and dancing and on balance felt that the gala dinner "ate" into Saturday evening perhaps a bit too much. I really needed to lie down afterwards .

Weirdly I seemed to enjoy Friday evening most as it was a little quieter - although it was impressive to see the way that Marc can fill a dance floor with his music. I also got a lovely compliment from a guy who said I was a "natural dancer" who was able to cover his mistakes and he danced with me twice. The gender balance seemed worse on the Saturday night and I got a refusal (although Maxine did her best to console me ). I managed to last until Franck finally appeared and he kindly agreed to dance with me making my night. I also had some very good dances with Iain L and (I think) the teacher Bill. By Sunday I was a bit T&E but I really loved Rocky's Motown and Soul session and had great dances with Mr Under Par, David Y and Tom Baker. Later on Rachel was able to offer me two of my favourite tracks in succession and I secured a dance with Ant. Later still Jivelad turned up and I cornered him but by then I was totally useless and had to leave the dance floor just as Franck emerged !

I rarely bother with ordinary classes at week-enders any more as they are usually so crowded but the non-master classes at Lux are more reasonable numbers wise and I enjoyed the 3 I did very much, especially Franck's stand up routine and the amazingly energetic Tim and Taz with their lovely "Glides and Slides".

On balance I personally didn't enjoy it quite as much as last year but I got the impression it was busier and generally everyone else seemed to like it like that. We have not yet booked for next year but I know people who have! Thanks so much to everyone who put in so much effort to making things run so well.

    Re: Lux - The Aftermath

    I had a great week-end overall at Lux. Here's my "good, not so good" summary;

    Good

    - Extra day in hotel for no extra cost - staying for the Sunday night really helped.
    - Hotel room, especially the fab air conditioning
    - Being able to easily pop back to your room to change, freshen up etc.
    - More dancers there than last year, quite a lot of people just turned up for free styles so there was an influx of new dancers each night
    - Food mostly good, especially the breakfasts
    - Great music nearly all the time in all the rooms
    - Being brave enough to dance with Kellese Key (who was absolutely delightful)
    - Memorable dances on all three nights, some with familiar faces, some not
    - Brent and Kellese being such fun and really getting into the spirit of week-ender free-styles, thanks - you were awesome
    - Managing not to be too tired, even on Sunday night
    - Most enjoyable classes I've ever done at a weekender
    - Chocolates in a chocolate log! Mmmmmmm......
    - This year the event did not tail off on Sunday because no-one left early.

    Not so good

    - Blues room sometimes almost empty sadly (blues scheduled too early on Sunday night imo) while other rooms were crowded
    - Having bright idea to hang "room ready for service" sign outside room whilst we ate breakfast in the hope that room would be cleaned in time to allow for a long morning's uninterrupted sleep Room finally cleaned almost 2 hours later
    - Formal dinner dragged on a bit
    - Food not quite as good as last year imo, Sunday lunch a bit disappointing.

As last year, this was a very well organised event and this year improved things by having the extra night and selling a lot more non-residential options. Might explore one of these options for next year.

    Re: Lux - The Aftermath

    As already mentioned
    Chocolates:
Food, excellent especially the breakfast and sunday lunch
The formal dinner was nice but it really took up too much dance time
My best dances were just after midnight on Saturday and one practically amazing dance on Sunday evening
I did not notice a big gender imbalance, several of the excellent classes, had a lot of men over
The Milonga room was either empty or nearly empty which, considering the trouble Amir went to teach the well attended classes a simple Tango walk, was a pity
My room was over the dance floor so hardly any sleep day or night
I will definitely be going next year but probably not the residential package
