What were you doing 33yrs ago today ?

When the King died on 16th August 1977 (Elvis) to some.

I heard it confirmed via French radio (an exchange student was staying at my parents house).

It’s not my earliest memory but it’s a day (or evening as it was) I clearly remember.

Was it only 33 yrs ago

I was in a caravan in Great yarmouth when I heard on the radio about Elvis. I was 5.

Oh how my life has changed since those hard up days of caravanning in Great Yarmoth...no, wait a minute...I've just come back from a caravan holiday in Great Yarmouth.

I’m obviously quite a bit older than you Stewart 33 because I remember it well. I was curled up on the sofa watching the news (I was living in the Barbican at the time), when a piece came on saying that Elvis was dead. Then another newsflash said that he wasn’t dead but had been rushed to hospital and finally later in the news they confirmed that he was dead.

No idea, I don't think I even knew who he was at the time.

This was the year I met Sue, my wife. I was 20.

When I went around to her house on my motorbike she was playing an Elvis record and told me the news. This was in the days of vinyl.

I don't remember being particularly upset at the time - just a bit put out when when we had to endure what seemed like Elvis' entire back catalogue edging out the usual fayre of Donna Summer, The Floaters and Heatwave at my junior disco that evening. The DJ at the time was a bit of an "old rocker" - probably about 40 (!) and the bikers in the corner were a bit subdued that night - I think I may have seen the glint of a tear or two in a few eyes.

I do this thread most years I think ?

I def did ‘where were you 29yrs ago’ (4yrs ago)

You seem to give the same reply each time , conspiracy I think.

I’m going to end it on 'where were you 75 years ago today (if the nursing home allow it)

    Just think 33yrs ago

    No internet,
    No mobile phones
    No Sat Nav

The ‘calculator’ was fairly new as was the $300 red digital watch (I saw one of those in about 75)

3 TV channels (We had a colour TV by then for at least 3yrs). Listening to the long beeeeeeeep after BBC play god save the queen at night then closed down. Watching the BBC 2 test card for hours as a kid (modern kids with their 300 channels you dont know how unlucky you are).

The highlight for me was when the beeeeeeep went to a hissssssssssss on BBC1, you had to wait 2/3 mins for that

Happy days, I wonder what ever happen to Jane Lush ?

Ahh, yes, but we had Tom & Jerry, Pipkin, Elmer Fudd, Danger Mouse, Batfink, Monkey (BBC2), The Crystal Maze, Willow the Wisp, Grange Hill, Jamie and his Magic Torch, etc, etc.

Kids today have got Sponge Bob Squarepants and iCarly.

I was 11 and on holiday with my mum in America. She has seen an Elvis concert advertised and tried to get tickets. Unable to get them we watched the live broadcast on telly. I think he died the next day.

I can't remember where I was but do remember the date (not the year) and that he died on the loo

His last concert was 26 June 1977 , although he was intending to do more

I was travelling overland down through Thailand on the way to Singapore and Bali. I had hitch-hiked and taken buses through 15 countries including Afghanistan and India because I had a put a £60 bet on Southampton to win the FA Cup against Manchester United and they won 1-0. The £300+ I won helped me to go on my travels.

I was four years old and only a few weeks away from starting school. For all I knew or cared at the time, Elvis could have been a brand of carpet shampoo.
