    Planet Facebook hits 500million

I note the social network site has surpassed the 500 million user marks last night.

I know not many people come on here because of sites like that

Do you think its has been detrimental to forums like this or a benefit ?

I think this has been mentioned before in another thread a few months back and I still feel the same; they both have their place and can coexist.

For me the forum is good for debate, to find out who’s going where dance venue wise and get feedback from events.

Facebook is good for instant chat, more light hearted discussions and my other love (other than dancing) scrabble.

I would not like to see the demise of either of them

I assume this forum wont last much longer ?

I use face book to find out what is going on in the dancing world.

I suppose I have to find out what Twitter is all about now.

Correction this forum will last as its not banned at work like face book

Facebook is evil. It excessively invades privacy and iI's a walled garden, breaking many of the principles that led to the success and growth of the Internet.

I'm not going to predict its imminent demise, just hope for it

Facebook has spawned some interesting new communication models.

One example, is what is referred to as 'vaguebooking'. This is where someone will post something on their status which is deliberately vague, prompting others to ask "what's up?" or "what do you mean?".

    Examples might be:

    "So excited about this afternoon......"

    "That was a disaster"

"Must make it smoother next time"

"Big smile on my face today"

    etc........

    (These are all made up).

They are harmless and I guess just ways of communicating when you can't deliver or respond to facial expressions.

Personally I like FB (especially Scrabble) and it does complement a forum mode. I don't quite get the "invasion of privacy" issue - because that is under your control - at the extreme, don't use it.

I hope you’re wrong about that, as I still think there is room for both and I still feel there is more intellectual and stimulating debate on the forum, than you get on facebook.

I hate those types of statuses; they irritate me, rather than make me respond.

It's not just Facebook. There's one really irritating forumite on here who posted absolutely nothing but vague "non" posts and instead of ignoring them, other forumites take the bait and ask about the vague statement...there's never a follow-up explanation so the first post was completely pointless. Grrrr!

    Quite!

I can't name and shame, but I've just looked at this forumites last 20 posts and every single one is a vague "non" post.

I was also thinking that if you substitute Thursday for Friday, it pretty much sums up my job

Well back to Facebook without naming and shaming (but how I’d like to) there is a person, who if they don’t get enough of a/any response, to their vague status, they post the status again later.

(I think all this b1tching on my part, is why my trust has blocked facebook)

but that's the great thing about Facebook (IMO), if someone irritates you, they get culled.

I’ve done a blocking of certain people’s postings so you don’t see what they write, it’s a kinder way of culling, because to all intent and purpose you’ve culled them – only they don’t know.

I quite like FB for the people who come out of the woodwork and people from the past. Two dear friends who I haven't seen for 14 years recently made contact and are now coming from Australia to visit me here in Sri Lanka.

    Re: Planet Facebook hits 500million

Just to continue the 'Vaguebooking' theme. There is a FB site dedicated to it http://www.facebook.com/pages/Facebo...489?ref=search which is mildly amusing.

Specifically, it is defined as: "Vaguebooking - An intentionally vague Facebook status update, that prompts friends to ask what's going on, or is possibly a cry for help. ".

It doesn't always work - as per this example:

Facebook friend posted this: "please exit my mind... thankk youuu " One of her friends posted this: "?????" and then that person went on to say it was none of his business.

Other classics on this site are:

"Ugh... Not good. Don't know what to do."

"woke up to a most disturbing shock this morning. No one will ever guess . . ."

"This is the worst anything, ever."

"Is very happy!!!" (Same person a couple posts ago but now 3 exclamation points)

"is totally exhausted, but it was worth it! I hope."

Yes there are definitely some good things about facebook like that, such as my Aussie friend, who went back to Australia, finding me and now we occasionally have chats on the instant messenger, at the opposite end of our day.
