    Re: World Cup

Well it has happened - according to plan.......as trailed in the FT:

Phase one: England enter the World Cup certain they will win it.
    Yeah...........

Phase two: the campaign is upended by a freakish piece of bad luck that the English conclude could only happen to them.
The Lampard 'goal' could of course only happen to England vs Germany - to balance out the 1996 'goal'.

Phase three: England lose to a former wartime enemy.
Inevitable....Germany or Argentina take it in turns. This time Germany. Of course, there are many other countries who would fit the bill at the next World Cup (if we qualify). Iceland perhaps?

Phase four: the nation decides the team is spoiled, overpaid and unpatriotic.
Well.......er, yes they are.......(though John Terry did a belting version of 'God Save the Queen')

Phase five: a scapegoat is found.
Capello, the system, Sepp Blatter, Rooney et al.....

Phase six: England enter the next World Cup certain they will win it.
    ....never stop believing
