Put it this way - if your partner looks in pain, is pushing you away, subsequently spends large portions of the dance leading you with arms which are fully extended away from you, avoids you like the plague after the dance, and you catch them repeatedly muttering to their pals while looking/pointing at you with a scared look on their face, then you need to worry.

Needless to say this completely fails to pick up cases where a perve dances with a perve...
Ta I know I'm a Blues fanatic, so I was just checking that I wasn't going overboard. Innocent dancing, Me?? Far more !

OK then I shall peacefully, instead of ending up in

Be fair - he probably doesn't say it to the experienced dancers...

Perhaps he did it fearing that you might do something "worse"?

Absolutely right - quite unthinkable. Naughty certainly, very bad sometimes but never just bad.

    Re: Teachers Tips

Is it still common place that beginner girls waiting in line to come on shadow practice following?

It used be seen a lot and I was particularly keen to stamp it out at the venue where I taxied. It probably seems very petty and harsh. But in my experience the girls doing it become more difficult to lead as they impress it on their minds that that is how the move is done and ergo fail to take into account variations (of course when beginning one doesn't know about variations).

    Hahahhahaha....

I would have loved to see that.

On the subject of stamping. I hear it from men and women to Alex Fox La Guilatero. Its blinking hard to get the lady in a position each time when she expects to be stamping sometimes. Mainly because I switch off to the fact she expects it and am doing something else.

If I danced with someone who expected to stamp, I'd put her in a dip or spin at stamping time. Try bloody stamping now!

It wouldn't be quite so bad if these stampers managed to stamp in time with the music, but they almost always get it wrong.

Mind you, that's assuming I could be bothered remembering who the stampers were and when they like to stamp; and the chances of that are fairly slim.

One of the best tips I ever got about partner dancing........

Beginner: Are you any good at this?

Intermediate/Advanced Dancer: I am only as good as the person I am dancing with.

One of the best tips? Really? Why do you think so? I'm not sure that response is encouraging to the beginner at all.

    Re: Teachers Tips

Well, I can certainly see why it might appear so. Perhaps I began incorrectly. I really mean that an intermediate dancing with a beginner should dance in a way that takes into account their partners abilities. A good intermediate should be able to asses that. I never knew how to answer a beginner when they asked if I was any good. Should I have said yes I'm brilliant? What would you suggest Tiggerbabe?

    Agreed.

I don't think it's something that beginners normally ask, usually they will tell you that you're too good. Smile, offer your hand and ask them for a dance.

    Re: Teachers Tips

Often got asked it particularly during the class when a new partner stands in front of you. I am talking about classes in London 14/15 years ago. Maybe they don't ask these days.

    Re: Teachers Tips

In my experience they most often just ask if you have "done this before?", to which I respond, "yes". They are mostly just looking for reassurance that their partner knows what they are doing. In my view, whether I am "any good" or not is for my partner to determine.
