I'm afraid to say that I've often 'switched off' mid-dance; but for a completely different reason. If my partner manages to get halfway through the track without so much as even glancing at me then that's the point at which I switch off. It feels like a large part of the connection is totally absent.
I realise some people are shy, and maybe feel intimidated by eye-contact; I know I felt that way when I first started MJ. However, quite often the people who do this are highly competent dancers, so it can't be from concentration or worrying about their technique.
I'm sure people have discussed eye-contact on here before, but I thought I'd just mention it in connection with 'switching off'. Sorry if my viewpoint offends people who are shy, but it's the way I feel.
